Computers Without Borders

Computers Without Borders Non-profit corporation established by Ron Berglund in 2011 to help further the education of children in the undeveloped world

In 2013 it is planned that the organization will be working on setting up the infrastructure and fund raising to facilitate the procurement of hundreds of refurbished desktop computers to be shipped to and installed in schools in Belize and Nicaragua. In 2013 it is hoped that schools in Honduras, Guatemala and the Philippines can be targeted. At the same time, programs are being developed with local colleges to help with computer training and maintenance.

During a recent trip to Ecuador, Computers without Borders discovered a hidden gem in Canoa. We found that the school the James Dean Foundation (see below) supports URGENTLY needs computers! Due to the cost of shipping desktop PCs, we are rounding up as many laptops as we can and sending them to Ecuador with visitors. Anyone visiting Ecuador can bring along up to two laptops with no import taxes. If you -- or your business- have any used computers to donate, please let us know. And please contact us if you know anyone who will be traveling to Ecuador this year. Please help us try to do something great! Thanks!

Please check the EFE Backpack Project started by Bernice Cordero to support the school. Bernice lives in Houston and has been a long supporter of our project. Click here EFE to find out more ...

Help us if you can! We have had a surprisingly hard time getting the opportunity to speak to the "wizards" at companies (large and small) throughout the USA to find out what they do with their office computers after the 2 or 3 year warranty expires. We know that some companies lease, some have relationships with PC companies like Hewlett-Packard, and others work with big e-recyclers. But I KNOW that many companies either have no plan, let used PCs collect in closets, and some even destroy them because they are worried about data security. We can assuage all these concerns-- we just need to get behind the curtain to speak with the Wizard of Oz! If you work at a company (or agency) YOU can probably obtain the name and phone number of the person we can call and speak with about the mission of CWB! Please help us out and let us know WHO the wizard is at your place of business! We appreciate any help we can get! Thanks very much. The Scarecrow

Computers without Borders in Ecuador! In February, once again with the help of our friend Kary Vannice, our Quick Start program opened a portal into Ecuador! We donated a computer system to an indigenous university near Riobamba in central Ecuador. The institute is dedicated to preserving the indigenous way of life with a goal of balancing traditional practices with modern technology and science. We are looking forward to establishing a partnership with COMPAS- an international program working in ten countries-- which is affiliated with the institute and many others.

You may reach the internet via newfangled wireless connection most of the time, but all those ones and zeros cross the oceans the same way old-fashioned telephone connections did: by undersea cables. The map masters at TeleGeography have charted the course the internet takes to cross the seas in 201...

Give us your tired, your virus-clogged, your slow used computers.
Your outmoded models yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of our teeming abundance.
Send these, the weary, imperfect, older models to Computers without Borders and we will safely wipe, repair and send to impoverished students in the developing world who will love and appreciate them: "We lift [our] lamp beside the golden door."

―Paraphrase of the famous quote on the Statue of Liberty.

We are going to have to nominate Kevin Hart for an Oscar for best performance for an actor! We also need to ask him to be a spokesperson for CWB! He is "giving back" in his home town!

PHILADELPHIA -- PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Actor and comedian Kevin Hart donated 500 computers to schools and recreation centers in his hometown of Philadelphia, a move that he hopes will inspire others to follow his lead.
