⚠️ HAB Advisory ⚠️

We have more confirmed harmful algal blooms (HABs) on both sides of Canadarago Lake.

Please use caution and avoid areas of water that look suspicious, including water with unusual discoloration, surface scum, or floating material. When in doubt, stay out.

HABs can change and move throughout the lake, so please be aware of what the water looks like before swimming or allowing children or pets into the water.

If you spot a suspected HAB, please take a photo and report it to CLIA or the NYS DEC. Your reports help us monitor conditions and keep the lake community informed.

🎣 DEC Fisheries Monitoring on Canadarago Lake

The NYSDEC Bureau of Fisheries has been continuing its long-term fish population monitoring on Canadarago Lake this summer. Gill netting is conducted each month from June through September to monitor resident percid populations, particularly yellow perch and walleye, while also collecting information about the overall health and fish community of the lake.

The DEC team has been working with two nets each month and processing the catch at the State Marine Park. They are also collecting otolith and scale samples from walleye to help determine their ages and better understand the lake’s walleye population over time.

One exciting finding this year has been the continued presence of walleye stocked through CLIA’s fall stocking program. In June, 7 of the 26 walleye caught had the fin clips used to identify stocked fish. In August, 4 of 14 walleye caught were also identified as CLIA-stocked fish. These results provide valuable information about the survival and success of the stocking program.

The survey also helps DEC track other species in the lake. This summer’s catches have included abundant alewife, yellow perch and a rare, non-native northern pike. DEC also monitors for unusual or non-native fish species as part of its ongoing fisheries and invasive species work.

We greatly appreciate Scott Wells and the NYSDEC Bureau of Fisheries for continuing this important long-term monitoring on Canadarago Lake. The information collected through these surveys helps us better understand our fish populations, lake conditions and the success of management efforts.

Thank you to Scott and his team for all of their continued work!

A Reminder to Be Courteous on the Lake

As we head into the rest of the summer, CLIA would like to remind everyone to be courteous and respectful of one another while enjoying Canadarago Lake.

The lake is shared by boaters, anglers, swimmers, paddlers, families, and many others who all have different ways of enjoying it. Please give others plenty of space, operate watercraft responsibly, and be mindful of how your actions may affect those around you.

Fishing, boating, swimming, and other recreational activities are all part of what makes our lake special. There is room for everyone to enjoy it safely and respectfully.

Please look out for one another, keep safety in mind, and remember that a little courtesy goes a long way.

Let’s work together to keep Canadarago Lake a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable place for everyone. 🌊

Another HAB sighting at the south end of the lake. The HAB seems to be widespread throughout the lake. Please be wary and cautious when visiting!!

A Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) is a rapid growth of certain types of blue green algae (cyanobacteria) that can produce toxins harmful to people, pets, and wildlife.

HABs can appear in a variety of colors, including bright green, blue green, turquoise, white, purple, brown, or reddish. They often look like spilled paint, pea soup, floating scum, streaks, or thick surface mats.

If you see what you think may be a HAB, avoid contact with the water and keep children and pets away. Please report suspected HABs to the Canadarago Lake Improvement Association or the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Photos and the location of the bloom are very helpful for identification.

🚨 HAB Sighting – Anabaena Identified 🚨

An algae bloom affecting Canadarago Lake near Baker’s Beach has been identified as Anabaena based on a sample viewed under a high-power microscope.

Anabaena is a cyanobacteria species known to produce neurotoxins, though it’s impossible to determine precisely when toxin production is occurring. For that reason, we continue to urge extreme caution.

As always, please:
> Treat all blooms as harmful
> Keep children and pets out of the water
> Rinse thoroughly after any water contact
> If you draw household water from the lake, consult your treatment system provider

We’ll continue to monitor and share updates as we have them. Thank you for helping protect the health of our community and the lake we love.
