Get planting!

Wondering what you can plant with this early Spring? Be mindful of what you can afford to lose or cover if a cold snap comes through. Early planting when soil and air temps aren't ideal can cause health issues and germination issues, but we just experienced an extremely warm February. Always look at your 10 day forecast before planting. If tomatoes are your garden goal, we have a class for that!

What to plant now...

What to plant this month: Plant your tomato, eggplant and pepper transplants as soon as possible. Basil is a wonderful addition, and there are many varieties. From seed: cantaloupe, collards, corn, cucumber, honeydew, lima beans, luffa, okra, snap beans, Southern peas, winter and summer squash, sweet potato slips, Swiss Chard, and watermelon. Something unique: Buy turmeric root from an Asian Grocery and plant about an inch and 1/2 underground. You can use leaves throughout the year. I love growing lemon grass and using the stalks in recipes as well.

Just a reminder that our garden at Mohawk is organic. If you have a plot, please don't use Roundup or any other non-organic pesticide. Pyrethrin is a pesticide that is considered organic but is also on the no-no list per the plot agreement. It will kill the bee population along with the bad guys. If you need bug help, feel free to ask me. (Sandy)

If you notice that weeds are dead in the garden, Tony Strohmeyer and I sprayed them with a mixture of apple cider vinegar, dish soap and salt... not roundup.

A little info about roundup...

Please share this newsletter with everyone in your address book and all your friends on Facebook and Twitter to help me spread the word on organics.
