You may remember sweet Cricket, the little pup we recently rescued from the Fort Worth Animal Shelter with a broken jaw. She has been through a LOT—diagnostics, treatment, and weeks of being muzzled, (even while eating). Through it all, she has remained the sweetest little angel. 💙

And, unfortunately, she has also been an expensive little angel for our organization!

Yesterday, Cricket had a follow-up appointment with her oral surgeon. During the exam, we discovered that one of her adult canine teeth was severely deformed and wasn’t going to erupt properly. It would eventually cause significant problems, including the possibility of an abscess.

The injury is believed to have occurred when her jaw was fractured, and unfortunately, this was not something that was going to correct itself as she continued to grow.

So, rather than wait for a bigger problem to fester, we elected to remove the retained baby tooth, the deformed adult canine, and the neighboring tooth so the surgeon could create a flap and properly address the area.

The total cost of yesterday’s procedure was $1,200. 😳

The GOOD NEWS is that Cricket’s jaw is healing exactly as expected, and she is finally being weaned off her muzzle! 🎉 Soon she’ll be able to eat regular food and, best of all, PLAY WITH TOYS! 🧸

The poor girl hasn’t been able to chew on toys or really be a puppy since we got her. But her jaw is healing beautifully, and she is expected to have no long-term problems from her injury.

Now we just need to find this busy little girl her forever home! 🏡💕

Cricket is energetic, playful, and ready to make up for lost puppy time. She’ll do best with an active family who will keep her entertained, take her on walks, and ideally provide another playful dog to keep her company. A fenced yard would be a huge plus, and because she’s still a young puppy, a home where someone is around more often than not would be ideal.

🐾 Meet Briareos — Our Hero! 💙

This gorgeous German Shepherd mix is proof that an “unplanned litter” really isn’t all that unplanned when dogs aren’t spayed or neutered. 😉

Briareos was born into an unplanned litter and given away as a puppy to a man without a secure fence. As that adorable, fluffy puppy grew into a handsome young Shepherd, he became a frequent visitor to the neighborhood on his own self-guided adventures.

And ...he even sired a litter with the unspayed female dog belonging to the same owner! 🤦‍♀️

In May, his owner gave him to a contractor, who unfortunately dumped him in a rural area of East Texas. Briareos roamed for WEEKS. Because he was wearing a collar, neighbors assumed someone nearby owned him and allowed him to wander.

Thankfully, he eventually found a kind man who began feeding and watering him and asking around to find out where he belonged. Then a good friend of a friend stepped up to foster him—and that’s how this handsome boy found his way to us. ❤️

Because Briareos was microchipped we were able to dig into his history.🫤

Today, Briareos has a name, a loving foster dad, and a second chance. And he’s ready for the next chapter of his life!

In Greek mythology, Briareos (also called Briareus) was one of the mighty Hecatoncheires, enormous giants known for their incredible strength and 100 hands. The name also inspired Briareos Hecatonchires, the powerful cyborg hero from the Appleseed manga and anime.

Our Briareos may not have 100 hands or be a cyborg, but he is an incredibly loyal boy who has already proven himself to be a survivor. And we think he’s pretty heroic, too. 💙

Briareos is simply a really, really good boy. He loves people, enjoys other dogs, and would LOVE a securely fenced yard with a healthy population of squirrels to supervise. 😂

Older kids? Absolutely.
Another dog? Great!
Dog-friendly cats? He can handle those, too.

He is the only one of the "Wheel Of Fortune Litter" that has not been scooped up yet by a Forever Family.

Let’s talk about social responsibility—and it starts with caring for the pets you already have.

There are countless reasons people surrender or dump their pets. If you can think of it, trust us—we’ve probably seen it. But one thing we see over and over again is the same people allowing their unaltered pets to produce litter after litter, only to dump those puppies and kittens at the shelter when there’s nowhere else to turn.

And while individual pet owners have a responsibility to prevent unwanted litters, municipalities have a responsibility, too.

In one Texas community, we continue to see repeat offenders bringing accidental litters to the shelter—sometimes one litter right after another—with little or no follow-up or accountability. And ultimately, it’s the animals who pay the price. The puppies and kittens born because someone failed to spay or neuter their pets become the responsibility of an already overwhelmed shelter and an increasingly exhausted rescue community.

Recently, DSDA had room for just two puppies.

Two elderly parents of one of our board members volunteered to visit the shelter, meet these babies, and transport them to our vet in Richardson.

There were six puppies in the litter. Now there are four left at the shelter hoping for a chance, too.

The two we have are incredibly sweet, loving, and social. Their previous owners at least gave them the gift of being well socialized—which will hopefully help them find wonderful homes.

They are two of the lucky ones.

We desperately hope the other four puppies—and all the other animals sitting in shelters right now—will be just as lucky and find loving homes soon.

But here’s the bigger issue:

Rescue cannot be the solution to an endless supply of unwanted litters.

There are only so many fosters and adopters. Only so much money. And the cost of even routine veterinary care has exploded.

DSDA and other rescues are exhausted. We will continue to help when we can, but we cannot rescue our way out of this problem.

📣 Greenville residents: YOUR VOICE MATTERS.

Please contact the City of Greenville City Council, the Mayor, the City Manager, the Shelter Manager, and the Shelter Commissioners and let them know:

It is unacceptable for a community to have no meaningful requirements or accountability for spaying and neutering pets when the shelter is repeatedly dealing with the consequences of unwanted litters.

Ask them what is being done to prevent the same owners from repeatedly producing and surrendering litter after litter.

Ask for real solutions—not just more pressure on shelters and rescues to clean up the aftermath.

Because every unwanted litter represents animals who didn’t choose to be born into a system where there may not be a place for them.

The puppies aren’t the problem. The people and systems that allow this cycle to continue are.

And Caleb and Abby? They are proof of what happens when someone finally says, “Yes, these two deserve a chance.” ❤️

❄️SNOW WHITE & HER 7 RUSSET POTATOES… WAIT!…DWARFS…WAIT…ROLY POLY PUPPIES! ❄️👸🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶

Last week, this precious family was rescued from under a house in the brutal Texas heat. 🥺💔 Snow White and her seven babies were living in unimaginable conditions, and they desperately needed somewhere safe.

Today, they got their HAPPY ENDING — well, the beginning of it! 🎉❤️

After 5 days at the vet clinic receiving the utmost care and attention, Snow White and her 7 chunky, ridiculously adorable puppies were finally discharged and delivered to their foster home! 🏡

And yes… we originally thought Snow White had brought us 7 little russet potatoes. 🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔

BUT WE WERE WRONG.

Turns out, these potatoes are actually DWARFS! And if you know your Snow White, you know there should be seven of them. So apparently this litter came with its own built-in Disney theme. 😍

But while the puppies are chunky and thriving, their mama still has a long way to go. Snow White is extremely thin — just saggy skin over pointed bones — and very anemic due to her flea infestation and absolutely exhausted. She’s still pretty shut down, which is completely understandable after everything she’s been through.

But we can already see a tiny spark in her eyes that says she knows something good is happening. 🥹❤️

And she couldn’t have landed with a better foster mom.

Sasha, our incredible DSDA “Maternity Ward” foster mom, has fostered literally hundreds of moms and puppies over the past 9 YEARS. She’s moving soon, but she opened the Maternity Ward ONE LAST TIME for this precious family. 🥰

So Snow White gets a safe cool place to recover… and her seven little Dwarfs get all the cuddles, snuggles and attention they could possibly want. ❤️

Rosie is READY! Ready for what? 😅

ADOPTION NEWS!!!! Nathan n/k/a Oakley, from the Wheel of Fortune Litter, has spun the Wheel and WON the coveted prize of a forever family of his own! This cutie pie will have a new mom, dad, adorable teen, two playful doodles, and a senior shepherd to romp and play with! These folks LOVE their dogs!! He will be very spoiled!

Born on April 29th—the very first night after we brought his pregnant mama in from a field—Nathan and his siblings, thankfully, have only known love, happiness, and excellent care. Their sweet mom, once simply known as “Puppy,” is now our very own Vanna White. She was a loved and owned dog who sadly had not received the care she needed and was quite pregnant by the time we were able to make a rescue plan for her. Finn’s Adoption Announcement! 🐾❤️

We’re a little behind announcing that Charter (Oaks) now Finn—has officially been adopted! 🎉

He was rescued after being dumped in a rural area outside Dallas, covered in fat, engorged ticks. He found a home and desperately begged for help, but unfortunately, because of the ticks, no one wanted him around. 💔

Thankfully, we heard about this sweet boy and knew we had to help. His Guardian Angels coordinated his rescue and got him the much-needed bath and tick removal he desperately needed.

His foster family even gave him his original name, Charter (Oaks), because they were traveling in Napa when they first heard about this cutie and agreed to foster him. ❤️

Once he arrived at his foster home, Charter quickly proved to be an absolute perfect puppy—and one of the most photogenic puppies we’ve ever had! 📸😍

Around the time he became available for adoption, one of our wonderful DSDA alumni families was looking for a new buddy for their sweet Great Pyrenees boy, who had recently lost his best friend and was ready for a new companion.

And it turns out Charter—now Finn—was exactly who they were looking for! 🥰

We could not be happier for this incredibly deserving boy. Finn went from being dumped and unwanted to having a family, a best friend, and a place to call home. ❤️

🚨🚨 Mom & 7 Days Old Puppies Rescued From Extreme Heat — Now Safe With DSDA! 🚨🚨

Last Monday we were contacted by independent, boots-on-the-ground, rescuers about a desperate situation involving a stray mom and her newborn puppies.

Mom had given birth beneath a home in Dallas, and the heat index was a staggering 109°. She had no reliable access to food or water and the homeowner wanted the dogs removed.

The pups were trapped deep under the house and without help there was a very real possibility that these babies—and potentially their exhausted mother—would die.

The rescuers contacted the available city resources:

• Dallas 311/Animal Control: They were told Animal Control would not go underneath a home to retrieve the puppies or even set a trap for Mom outside the opening.

• 911: They were directed to contact rescue organizations.

• Dallas Fire Department: They were redirected back to 911.

When the homeowner covered the opening to keep Mom from getting to her pups she became desperate and dug another way in!

The rescuers were running out of options.

Thankfully, several independent, determined women refused to give up on this family. On Wednesday night, they finally secured permission to enter the property and carefully retrieve Mom and all seven puppies.

By then, the shelter had closed, so one of the rescuers opened her home to them for the night.

At the same time, a DSDA foster family stepped up, but because of prior travel plans, they couldn’t take the family until Monday.

Thursday morning, we called one of our amazing veterinary partners—and they had room to board the entire family until the foster home was ready.

And that is where this little family is today. ❤️

The veterinary staff have been taking incredible care of this precious mama and her seven 14-day-old puppies—five boys and two girls.

After everything they endured, they deserved a little magic.

❄️ Welcome Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs! ❄️

Just days ago, this exhausted mama was desperately trying to protect her babies beneath a house in 109° heat, with nowhere safe to go.

Today, they have a cool, safe place to sleep, plenty of food and water, veterinary care, and a loving foster home waiting for them.

And while we are grateful that DSDA could help get them to safety, the real heroes of this story are the women who refused to give up on them. They made the calls, kept searching for answers, gained access to the property, physically rescued this family, and even opened their own home when there was nowhere else for them to go.

They didn’t wait for someone else to save them. They became the heroes this mama and her babies desperately needed. ❤️

That is rescue.
