Every day we try to honor the generations who survived, resisted, organized, and demanded what was always theirs.​

Juneteenth is a celebration of Black freedom, Black resilience, and the enduring struggle for justice. It recognizes the people whose courage, resistance, and determination made liberations possible.​

Today, we reflect on that legacy and recognize that the fight for dignity, safety, and full justice is still ongoing. At MLFA, we know that protecting freedom requires vigilance, advocacy, and a continued commitment to defending the rights of our communities.​

This morning a federal judge has ordered the immediate release of Salah Sarsour, a respected Milwaukee community leader who spent more than 80 days in immigration detention.

The Court found that Mr. Sarsour raised a substantial First Amendment retaliation claim, recognizing the serious constitutional questions at the center of his detention.

Throughout this case, MLFA's Immigration Litigation Department Head, Kate Brady served as co-counsel in the federal habeas case, as well as in immigration court alongside a dedicated legal team fighting to protect Mr. Sarsour's rights and challenge government action that threatens free speech and due process.

Today is about a family being reunited. It is also a reminder that constitutional rights only remain meaningful when they are defended.

Constitutional rights do not disappear when a community becomes unpopular, when speech becomes controversial, or when political pressure rises.​

For 25 years, MLFA has stood in the legal fights where due process, free speech, and equal protection are most aggressively tested. Our work is rooted in a simple principle: rights are not privileges granted only to the accepted, the silent, or the politically convenient.​

They belong to all of us.​

The Supreme Court has allowed Alabama to use a congressional map that a lower court found was intentionally discriminatory toward Black voters.​

The consequences go far beyond Alabama. When discriminatory maps are allowed to stand, communities that have already fought to be heard are pushed further from political power.​

At MLFA, we know civil rights protections are only meaningful when they are enforced. When courts weaken those protections, marginalized communities are left to carry the consequences. ​

Voting rights are civil rights. Protecting them protects all of us.

A new federal lawsuit is challenging conditions at Camp East Montana, the country's largest immigration detention facility. The lawsuit alleges medical neglect, abuse, unsafe conditions, and denial of meaningful access to attorneys.​

DHS denies the allegations.​

When Muslim communities are threatened, we do not get to treat it as ordinary politics.​

Calls to “obliterate” Muslim developments should alarm everyone who believes in religious freedom, equal protection, and constitutional rights.​

No faith community should have to defend its right to exist, worship, build, or belong.​

MLFA is watching closely because anti-Muslim rhetoric does not stay rhetorical for long. When public officials turn fear into policy, communities need legal defense that is ready.​

Religious freedom does not disappear when the community is Muslim.
