High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, also called *hypertension*, happens when blood pushes against your artery walls with more force than normal. If it stays high for a long time, it damages blood vessels and strains the heart.

1. *How it’s measured*
Blood pressure has 2 numbers:
- *Systolic*: Pressure when the heart beats. Normal < 120 mmHg
- *Diastolic*: Pressure when the heart rests. Normal < 80 mmHg
Readings of 130/80 mmHg or higher are considered high.

2. *Common causes and risk factors*
Often there’s no single cause. Main contributors are:
- Too much salt and processed food
- Lack of exercise
- Excess alcohol and smoking
- Stress, obesity, and poor sleep
- Family history and aging
Some cases come from kidney issues, thyroid problems, or medications.

3. *Why it matters*
It’s called the “silent killer” because most people don’t feel symptoms until damage is done. Untreated hypertension raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and vision problems.

4. *Management basics*
- *Lifestyle changes*: Reduce salt, eat more fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, limit alcohol, stop smoking, manage stress, maintain a healthy weight.
- *Medical treatment*: If needed, doctors prescribe medications like ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, or diuretics.
- *Regular monitoring*: Check your BP at home or at a clinic since you can’t feel it rising.

High blood pressure is common but controllable. Early detection and small daily habits make the biggest difference. If you’ve had readings above 130/80 more than once, it’s worth speaking with a doctor.

🩸 DIABETES AWARENESS WEEK
✅ DAY 1 – FUN FACT: Sugar Is NOT the Real Villain 😲

Most people think diabetes simply means:

“Too much sugar in the body.”

But here’s today’s powerful truth 👇

👉 *The real issue in diabetes is INSULIN — not sugar itself.*

---

🧠 What Really Happens Inside the Body?

Every time you eat food (rice, bread, yam, fruits, even healthy carbs), your body breaks it down into *glucose* (sugar).

Glucose is not bad.
In fact, it is your body’s **main source of energy.**

Now here’s where the magic normally happens:

🗝 The pancreas releases a hormone called *insulin*.
Insulin acts like a KEY.

Its job is to:
✅ Unlock your cells
✅ Allow glucose to enter
✅ Give your body energy

When everything works well, sugar leaves the blood and enters the cells.

🚨 So What Happens in Diabetes?

In diabetes, one of two things happens:

1️⃣ The body does not produce enough insulin
OR
2️⃣ The body becomes resistant to insulin (the key no longer works properly)

This means:

❌ The “door” of the cell doesn’t open well
❌ Sugar stays trapped in the bloodstream
❌ Blood sugar levels rise

Meanwhile, your cells are starving for energy.

Imagine having plenty of food outside your house, but the door is locked.
That’s what happens in diabetes.

⚠ Why Is High Blood Sugar Dangerous?

When sugar stays too long in the blood:

- It sticks to proteins (a process called glycation)
- It damages blood vessel walls
- It causes inflammation
- It slowly injures organs

Over time, this can affect:
👁 Eyes
🫀 Heart
🧠 Brain
🩺 Kidneys
🦶 Nerves in the feet

And the scary part?
This damage can happen silently.

---

💡 Important Reminder

Glucose is not the enemy.
Insulin problems are the real issue.

That’s why diabetes is called a **metabolic disorder**, not just a “sugar disease.”

✅ DAY 2 – FUN FACT: There Is More Than One Type of Diabetes 😮

Many people think diabetes is just one disease.

But here’s today’s eye‑opening truth:

👉 Not all diabetes is the same.

There are different types — and they don’t all happen for the same reason.

---

🧬 1️⃣ Type 1 Diabetes – When the Body Attacks Itself

Type 1 diabetes is an *autoimmune condition*.

This means:
The immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin‑producing cells in the pancreas.

As a result:
❌ The body produces little or no insulin
❌ The person must take insulin for life

It is NOT caused by eating sugar.
It is NOT caused by lifestyle.

It often develops in children or young adults — but adults can get it too.

📌 Without insulin, the body cannot survive.

⚖ 2️⃣ Type 2 Diabetes – The Most Common Type

This is the type most people have (about 90–95% of cases).

In Type 2:
✅ The body produces insulin
BUT
❌ The cells become resistant to it

It’s like having a key (insulin) that no longer fits properly into the lock (the cell).

Over time:
- The pancreas becomes tired
- Insulin production decreases
- Blood sugar rises

Type 2 is strongly linked to:
- Excess weight (especially belly fat)
- Physical inactivity
- Family history
- Unhealthy diet
- Aging

The good news?
👉 It can often be prevented or delayed.

We are bringing the remaining in subsequent post
