Peter learned two lessons on the water that day.

That by faith in Jesus he could do what Jesus was doing. And that without faith he was an ordinary man who would sink like a stone.

The first lesson cannot be taught by anyone. Not by me, not by the finest Bible teacher alive. You have to go "Aha" and get it yourself. That is what being taught by the Spirit means.

And it is why God so often leads us into deep water.

You are being led when you give back the extra change you were handed by mistake. When your conscience says apologise, and you obey. When you read about turning the other cheek and realise it applies to you this week.

No dream required. No voice in your head. The Spirit wants you honest and faithful, so you are.

The moment you realise you are walking in the flesh, what should you do?

Repent. Say sorry to God. Ask to be filled with the Spirit. Then get on with your Christian life.

Long sessions of self-reproach after a failure feel like humility, but mostly they keep you stationary. Paul is much brisker: stop driving in reverse, change gears, and move forward.

The word Paul uses for "walk" is peripateo — the word used of travelling philosophers. It means a whole manner of life, together with the outlook behind it.

Walking in the Spirit, then, is not a Sunday mood. It is a lifestyle and a philosophy that match the Holy Spirit, and it will show in how you handle money, conflict, status and time.

And note Paul's warning: keep in step. Rivalry, envy and conceit break the rhythm just as effectively as the obvious sins do.
