Nicodemus believed in God. He read the Bible, taught the Bible, and obeyed the Bible. And Jesus told him that he could not even see the kingdom of God until he was born again.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh. Religious effort, however sincere, produces religious effort. Only the Spirit gives birth to spirit.

Everyone needs this. Not only the prisoner and the addict — the respectable religious leader too.

Why does spiritual growth so often feel like standing still?

Because the difference between an immature believer and a mature one is vast, while the progress made on any single day is tiny. We compare the two and conclude that nothing is happening.

The saint is not made of different material. The saint has simply taken far more of the small steps, and kept walking in the same direction.
