I was happy to be invited to Land O Lakes Elementary School's Trout in the Classroom end of year release and open house presented by Miss Ivy Lapp's 3rd and 4th graders. Everyone did a fantastic job.

Miss Lapp and her students only needed some initial start-up equipment and direction on contacts with resource agencies. After that, they've been full stream ahead. For instance, last fall I asked if they needed any assistance in getting eggs. The reply had a photo of the newly hatched fry.

I was privileged to receive an invitation to the Three Lakes H.S. Ecology class's release of the Brook Trout they hatched and reared in their Trout In The Classroom Program. I witnessed the release along with the class's monitoring of the flow, temperature, and aquatic life, etc. in Four Mile Creek. One hatchling got into the habit of eating its siblings and was almost twice as big as the rest. Mr. Statz commented that between the time of his last numbers estimate to DNR and the release, the big boy cut the number of hatchlings almost in half.

Three Lakes High School's TIC class's Brookies are doing well. Teacher Luke Statz reports that they are off "fry chow" and eating blood worms. In what Luke describes as a lesson in natural selection, one fish channeled its cannibal tendencies.
Here are a couple shots of the glutton. Luke caught him/her in the act on video (beyond the skills of this geezer).

All credit goes to the class and teacher. They are very independent. Hopefully they'll have a memorable learning experience (and of course a great hatch).
