Join us in celebrating Sara Sommers, Nicolet College culinary arts student and our 2026/2027 Nicolet College Foundation Student Ambassador.

As a single mother going back to school in her 40s, Sara didn’t know how she was going to pay for college.

“The donors at the foundation have made my worries go away. I love that I'm able to focus on my dreams, and it wouldn't be happening if it wasn't for these donors.”

We’re excited to welcome Sara as our student ambassador and can’t wait to see the enthusiasm, leadership, and positivity she brings throughout the year!

Bill Shope spent most of his adult life addicted to alcohol and drugs. In 2020, he decided it was time to turn his life around, and he began attending Nicolet College.

This spring, Bill graduated with associate degrees in substance use disorder counseling and human services. He currently works as a substance abuse counselor in the community and this fall is attending UW-Superior, where he will pursue a degree in psychology with a minor in behavioral neuroscience.

Though going back to school in his 50s wasn’t easy, Bill says Nicolet College provided an amazing network of support to help him through. Hear how the Nicolet College Foundation provided essential scholarship support for Bill, making it possible for him to use his experience to help others.

Thanks to the generous support from Nicolet College Foundation donors, students in Nicolet College’s new Field Service Technician program will train on the same advanced systems used in today’s equipment and service industries.

Field Service Technician Instructor Steve Boogren demonstrates Nicolet College’s new controller area network (CAN) bus trainer, a hands-on learning tool that teaches how electronic devices in cars and machines communicate with each other. Purchased with funds from the Foundation, the CAN bus trainer will help students gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed in high-demand careers.

Know someone who’d be interested in this program? Tag them or share this post! There’s still time to enroll for fall. Learn more about the program and how to apply at https://www.nicoletcollege.edu/programs-degrees/mechanical-technology/field-service-technician

Last month, Nicolet College College hosted its first-ever Chef Week, featuring a food truck rally with seven trucks on campus, including one owned by alum Jake Haag.

After earning his associate degree in Culinary Arts, Jake honed his skills at local restaurants before launching his own food truck, Jakes Mobile Cafe, last summer. Today, he’s serving up everything from breakfast tacos and smashburgers to wraps, homemade fries, cheese curds, and more.

In this video, Jake shares how scholarships helped support his journey, and Culinary Arts Instructor Vicki Mendham reflects on what it’s like to see students grow, succeed, and come full circle.

For Nicolet College student Miguel Benito, a scholarship represents more than support for his own journey; it’s a reminder of the opportunities made possible for future students.

He knows scholarships like his are made possible by generous donors who open doors, create opportunities, and make education more accessible for those who come next.

Throwback Thursday to 1975, when Nicolet College’s ecology lab was already drawing attention as a growing hub for environmental education and career exploration.

Today, that foundation still shapes how students learn. Ecology continues to influence courses across disciplines, from biology to environmental science, helping students understand the connections between people and the world around them. Faculty like University Transfer Biology Instructor Roger Dorsey carry the legacy forward, bringing learning to life both in the classroom and out in the field. Dorsey’s classes include trips to logging sites, a fish hatchery, a bog, a stream, and various forest ecological communities, giving students hands-on knowledge and experience to complement their work in the classroom.

Through it all, the Nicolet College Foundation is proud to support opportunities that connect students to meaningful, real-world learning.
