Several of our workers are affected by these fires along with their neighbors and friends. Pray for them and the church to be good examples of Christ likeness in their circumstances.
“These last few days have felt like heaven meeting hell.
Hell is self-explanatory. Fire and smoke. Suffering. Loss. It happened so fast! We didn’t know! If only we’d had more time! It felt like there was nothing that could be done to stop it.
Heaven is less obvious.
When farmers saw that the firefighters lacked water, they showed up from all over the region with their tractors and water trailers, and they helped cut firebreaks. The city has come together to house evacuees, feed them, and clothe them. Urban and rural together.
I am so proud of my adopted country.
Heaven met hell.
For a moment, a couple of days, all the noise that normally fills our society was drowned out. It’s a paradox. Our true potential is only revealed by such an existential threat.
Last night we had friends over for dinner. The food tasted better. The laughter, richer. The joy intensified by the seriousness of the situation. Maybe our lives are too safe. Maybe, in our efforts to avoid hell and discomfort at all costs we have unknowingly sacrificed something essential.
The Ukrainian refugee who lived with us checked in when the fires made the news. Naturally, we checked on her too. Her response captures perfectly someone living in a long and grueling confrontation with hell:
‘I am very scared sometimes. I even go down to the basement. But in the morning, we go on living. Now the shelling has been more intense. We pray for the war to end.’
Me too, sister. Me too. Come, Lord Jesus! We long for this war to end.”

Please join us in praying for those who have been evacuated or experienced loss due to the ongoing forest fires. Pray that the Church would be a visible witness of Christ's love and compassion during this difficult season.
