This Police Week, we are thinking about why we became the police. Maybe we wanted a cool car (boy, were we disappointed to know we don’t all get to drive Chargers and Mustangs). Maybe we were trying to join a band (but we signed up for the wrong “The Police” booth on activity day). Maybe we just watched A LOT of Scooby Doo as a kid.
Most, if not all, police will tell you they wanted to help people and they wanted to make a difference in their communities. They wanted to improve someone’s life, help their neighbors, and keep people safe.
The job isn’t really all that glamorous, but they make a difference every day they show up to work!
Are they solving murders, assaults, and burglaries? Absolutely. They’re also helping you change your flat tire on the side of the highway, checking on your kids at school, stopping (or trying to stop) that car from running a red light and hitting you, watching your house while you’re in Maui, and helping you through the collision you (or your teenager) will inevitably be involved in.
They’re doing CPR on your child while you wait for an ambulance. They’re holding pressure on your wound after an attack or a vehicle collision. They’re taking your neighbors’ kids out of an unsafe home. They’re taking drugs out of your community. They’re investigating and arresting the people preying on your children on the internet. They’re arresting that drunk driver that could have killed your entire family.
Officers, deputies, detectives, school resource officers, administrators… we see you. We appreciate you. Every day.
This week is for the small things. The not so fun things. The things that make a difference every day; the things you won’t see on the news.
Happy Police Week to our lodge members in the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the Rexburg Police Department, and the Teton County Sheriff’s Office that are putting in the work to make a difference every day!
