Our local Freecycle community is still going strong! Thanks to all of our members for helping to keep usable stuff out of the landfill.

Happy 20th Anniversary, Freecyle! I sent out the first email announcing Freecycle some 20 years ago today, May Day, 2003, to about 30 friends and fellow nonprofits in order to re-gift a warehouse full of nonrecyclable stuff which we had collected via Rise Recycling. I couldn't give stuff away quickly enuf and Freecycle was just the ticket! So glad we've come so far. Over a thousand tons of items are gifted every day on Freecycle.org in over a hundred countries and over a 5k local groups. Go team, go! :-) Best, Deron

With Fairfax County suspending yard waste pickups, there has never been a better time to start a compost bin. Composting is easy and doesn't involve a big investment to get started.

If your compost bin is already full like mine is, an easy alternative is to mulch up winter clean-up debris with your lawnmower.

But however you choose to handle your yard waste, please don't dump yard waste in RA's natural areas. Dumping damages the plants that are already there and introduces invasive species.

Here is more information about composting from Reston Association.

As a charitable web community, The Freecycle Network has often provided a critical alternative method for our members to support each other in times of crisis, such as during hurricanes or earthquakes.

With the spread of COVID-19, we look forward to being here for each other now as well -- especially as access to public spaces becomes more limited.

Please, when gifting, do consider these steps to remain safe and healthy.

A friendly reminder from us here at Freecycle.org

Reducing and reusing are more important than ever, now that there is less recycling happening in Fairfax County.

Recycling is great, but reducing and reusing are even better 🙂

Recycling is great, but reducing and reusing are even better 🙂

There are five ways you can help stop the practice of "wishful recycling" – placing items in the recycling bin because you think it will probably be recycled. Up to 30 percent of materials sent to recycling facilities are not actually recyclable.
