Volunteer Reston Getting Involved in Reston The Reston Association (RA) truly values the benefits that volunteers bring to the community.

Each year, community members donate thousands of hours to the Association in a variety of different areas. Some for longer-term and others for short-terms commitments. Either way, the varied talents and interests of each individual are matched with the right project or endeavor to provide a rewarding and enjoyable experience. The RA volunteer program consists of about 500 active volunteers, working in a variety of capacities and settings.

Jacob Meyer, an IB Student at South Lakes High School, volunteered at the Walker Nature Center as part of the requirements of the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP), which includes completing a community service project. A huge thank you to Jacob and his team who spent several mornings spreading wood chips along the WNC trails, improving trail conditions and making them safer for everyone who visits. These trails had not been chipped in years and moving and spreading large piles was not an easy task.

This Earth Month Corporate Day of Service brought teams from Cooley LLP, Electrify America and ATPCO. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves in Reston to remove invasives, plant trees and native species, spread mulch, and clean up the community. Their donation to Friends of Reston helped bring these projects to life. Thank you for your hands-on support and commitment to building a cleaner, greener community.

Happy Volunteer Week! Thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers!

RA formally recognized that dedication during the Annual Members’ Meeting on April 14 with its 2025 Volunteer Reston Service Awards.

The Volunteer of the Year award was presented to William O’Brien, who has served for more than 13 years as a volunteer photographer. O’Brien’s work goes beyond capturing images. His photographs preserve the energy and joy of Reston’s events while his bright, welcoming presence sets the tone for gatherings across the community.
