For those of you who haven’t seen, there was some bad news the other day.

Tuesday afternoon, the Richmond Chevron refinery had an oil spill of about 600 gallons into the water off Point Richmond.

River otters frequent this area, meaning it could be dangerous for them, along with all other wildlife. While no “oiled” wildlife has been reported, it could quickly change. These accidents can be devastating for wildlife, so let’s keep our eyes open and fingers crossed that they stay safe!

Both feathers were dipped in oil and allowed to hang dry for 1 hour. On the left we have a feather cleaned using our solvent and on the right we have a feather cleaned using a 7% Dawn dish detergent solution.

Examining some of our cleaned feathers with 60x and 120x magnification! The first picture shows feathers cleaned with our chemical solvent and the second picture shows feathers cleaned with a Dawn dish detergent solution (the current leading product for oil spill response).
