Sr. Rosalie Locati recently welcomed Sr. Lorena González and Sr. Marisol Avila to Spokane, where she took the sisters on tours of Mt. St. Joseph Chapel, the Sisters of Providence Archives (led by Artifact Collections Curator Jessica Long), and Sacred Heart Medical Center Children’s Hospital. While visiting the Chapel, the Sisters met retired Bishop William Skylstad (fourth picture).

Sr. Rosalie shared stories of the rich history and legacy of the Sisters of Providence in Spokane, a longtime location of meaningful ministries and heritage for the congregation dating back to the 19th century.

Creator of all,

We thank you for the land, the waters, and the skies.

For the wisdom of traditions of Indigenous peoples who have stewarded them for generations.

Grant us hearts of respect and reverence, to listen to the voices of those who have walked the earth before us, and to care for your creation with justice, humility, and love.

Guide us in healing the wounds of history, and inspire us to live in harmony with one another and with the world you have made.

Five Sisters were on site at Providence Regina House to support a food and clothing bank this week. This community-based outreach ministry is in the South Park neighborhood of Seattle, and is a site of Providence St. Joseph Health's Mission Service Opportunities program. Its roots date back to 1963, when the late Sr. Mary Regina Bomber led its creation.

Our group of five ministering included (first picture, left to right) Sisters Julie Macasieb, Marisol Avila, Susanne Hartung, Lorena González, and Myrta Iturriaga.

Joining the Sisters in the second picture are Debbie and Michael, who manage Providence Regina House.

Loving and Provident God,

As Sisters of Providence, we lift up to you all people and communities affected by the wildfires that continue to burn throughout Spokane County. Hold close and sustain those who have been forced from their homes, and all who are living with fear and uncertainty during this natural disaster. Bring comfort to families who have been displaced and all who've lost their homes and businesses. Bring strength to those protecting loved ones, and peace to all who are anxious as this disaster unfolds.

Watch over the firefighters, emergency responders, volunteers, and all relief personnel who have traveled from afar to help protect communities in Spokane and who continue their work in dangerous conditions. Grant them courage, wisdom, endurance, and protection as they serve others.

We pray for business owners and all whose work is based in Spokane, including the many dedicated Providence St. Joseph Health caregivers who call the region home, that they may find support, resources, and hope amid these challenging days.

As the fires continue, we ask for your safeguarding presence over every community impacted. May those in harm's way receive timely warnings, safe shelter, and the care they need. Guide leaders in their efforts to protect lives and provide assistance.

We entrust all who are affected by these wildfires into your loving care and pray for the danger to pass. Lord, remind us that we are not alone in times of tragedy, and inspire us all to be generous neighbors and faithful stewards of hope for those who are suffering.

The Sisters capped a busy month of July together with an important four-day summit in collaboration with the Émilie Gamelin (Canada, Haiti & Egypt) and Bernarda Morin (Chile) regions of the congregation this week. This session was the first step toward next summer's General Chapter, in which a new Congregational Leadership Team will be elected to five-year terms.

The productive online-based gathering showcased the congregation’s commitment to unity and highlighted its multicultural strengths, as the primary language of the sessions rotated daily between English, Spanish, and French, with translators for each language ensuring everyone could contribute.

The next week-long session will take place in Chile, in January 2027. A third and final session will then occur at the congregation’s International Center in Montreal next July.

Tomorrow, the Sisters of Providence - Mother Joseph community will celebrate our Jubilee! But first, our fifth and final Jubilarian -- Sr. Beatrice "Bea" LaFramboise, SP -- deserves the spotlight for her meaningful and impactful 60 years as a Sister.

The oldest of seven siblings, Sr. Bea attributes her strong faith to her mother, Gloria, who instilled in her daughter a passion for those on the margins as the family was raised in Sunnyside, Washington. They lived near a migrant camp, and knew that all were welcome at their dinner table and there was space on the floor for sleeping bags for those needing a place to sleep.

Upon hearing the call to religious life, Sr. Bea followed the steps of her cousins -- Srs. Francella LaFramboise, SP, and Karin Dufault, SP -- and entered the Sisters of Providence in 1965. After an initial ten years in ministry a pre-school teacher, she began a storied ministry of social service – beginning with Providence Regina House on Cherry Hill, where she introduced the "service learning" for Bush School and for many Catholic High Schools in Seattle. She's also ministered at Providence Hospitality House, and continues additional long-standing ministries in spiritual companionship and food bank service.

Sr. Bea puts the "active" in active retirement, as she also serves as a board member of Intercommunity Peace and Justice Center and the Providence Hospice Foundation Board, and she’s on the 2027 General Chapter Planning Committee for the full Sisters of Providence congregation (which includes our Sisters belonging to communities based in Canada and Chile).

Sr. Bea shares her creativity making vibrant greeting cards, personal collages and art journals using her nature photos. She loves gatherings, cooking, and celebrating life's events.

As our Jubilee celebration draws closer this weekend, today we are shining a spotlight on the awesome efforts of Sr. Paula Cosko, SP.

Born in Los Angeles, she first met the Sisters of Providence as a student at St. Finbar Parish School in nearby Burbank -- and a call to lead a life like her beloved teachers came early. Sr. Paula entered the community at the age of 18, promptly went from being an only child in sunny southern California to living with 90 candidates and novices in Issaquah, Washington.

A passionate pull toward cultural diversity and education also arose early for Sr. Paula. She taught youth above the Arctic Circle in Alaska, and also ministered in Haiti. Her time in the classroom spent educating children spanned more than two decades -- only to make way for a prolific ministry in teaching English to adults learning it as a second language. Sr. Paula has served on the faculty of North Seattle College for 35 years and counting. With every new quarter of instruction, Sr. Paula has a class of 25-30 students, typically hailing from at least 17 different countries.

Her wealth of hobbies and interests include cooking (only from scratch) and tending to her vivid garden -- a space of refuge for local wildlife that enjoys it as much as she does. The Pacific Northwest has been a great fit for Sr. Paula, who loves spending time immersed in nature.
