Happy Earth Day from SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’š!!

Today weโ€™re celebrating not just the land, but the community that makes SHADOW what it is. Over the years, weโ€™ve heard so many stories from our community about this place. Volunteers who helped restore the original parcel of land have come back to see how much itโ€™s grown, and people who first visited as kids on field trips are now bringing their own families.

In just the past year, more than 250 volunteers have shown up to support our stewardship projects. Weโ€™ve been fortunate enough to partner with universities here in Washington and across the country, and collaborated with national organizations like the Audubon Society.

Weโ€™re especially grateful to The Mountaineers, who consistently show up to volunteer and make a huge impact on our restoration work, and to Woodland Park Zoo for helping support our research programs! Weโ€™ve also been feeling a lot of love from the community lately, through visits, donations, and even a feature in The Seattle Times that helped us connect with naturalists across the region.

Thank you to all for being a part of SHADOW!

Some pretty snow pics of the preserve โ„๏ธ

We didn't think we'd see snow this year, but the preserve woke up to snowfall a few days ago! The peat bog looks extra cozy, being a blanket of moss tucked under another blanket of snow.

The snow day did leave behind some damage on the trails and around the preserve, so consider joining us for our Community Stewardship Day this Saturday on 3/21. We will spend 3 hours helping the preserve recover from the damage, from 10 AM - 1 PM.

Participants will become eligible to join SHADOWโ€™s Amphibian Monitoring Squad! This lesson will be a combination of indoor classroom and outdoor field learning, so please dress appropriately.

๐Ÿšซ Please DO NOT wear bug spray or sunscreen to this class!!! Weโ€™ll be working in sensitive wetland habitat during the outdoor portion of the lesson, where these products can harm amphibians.
