Rensselaer Urban Forestry Council

Rensselaer Urban Forestry Council RUFC promotes the health of the Rensselaer community's urban forest and encourages public awareness and education of the value of community trees.

RUFC Accomplishments:

1. Achieved the distinction of "Tree City USA" from the National Arbor Day Foundation. We have achieved this designation for 6 consecutive years (as of 2014).

2. Completed a basic tree inventory of the city's street, park and cemetery trees

3. Received Growth Award for 3 consecutive years from the Arbor Day Foundation

4. Planted nearly 200 trees since inception

5. Purc

hased a tree auger with grant money from the Jasper Foundation and gifted it to the city of Rensselaer

6. Developed a nursery of seedlings and larger tree stock

7. In 2013, purchased and planted 41 trees for Phase 1 of Potawatomi Park with a grant from Indiana Department of Natural Resources (INDNR)

8. In 2014, purchased 60 trees with a grant from INDNR. Plantings occurred in Phase 2 of Potawatomi Park, along McKinley Ave., in Weston Cemetery and in Brookside Park. RUFC Goals:

1. To step up planting practices and species diversification for the city of Rensselaer's aging and/or diseased tree population.

2. Our strategic plan is to focus our plantings in highly traveled areas where they will have the most impact in cleaning the air we breathe and mitigate the pollutants.

RUFC gets a thumbs up from Rachael Stenger, Urban Forestry Outreach Coordinator, Division of Forestry, Indiana Department of Natural Resources for meeting requirements of trees selected and planted by BA Landscaping, Parker Balvich and Noah Ahler, owners. Along with Parker, the inspection was assisted by Ron Sheffler and Rick Williams. The initiative was supported by a grant from INDNR in collaboration with City Of Rensselaer, Indiana and Jasper Newton Foundation.

Respect trees; they were standing long before modern development changed the landscape.

New research published this month revealed something remarkable about oak trees: when heavily attacked by caterpillars one year, oaks delay their leaf growth by approximately three days the following spring. That three-day delay means the caterpillars hatch before the leaves they need to eat are available — effectively starving the next generation and reducing the following year's population.

This is one small example of why ecologists describe oak trees as the most ecologically valuable trees in North America. The full picture is extraordinary:

🌳 Caterpillar support — A single mature oak tree supports over 500 species of moth and butterfly caterpillars — more than any other tree genus in North America by a significant margin. This matters because caterpillars are the primary food source for virtually every songbird during nesting season. Research from the University of Delaware found that chickadees raising a brood of 6 chicks need to collect 6,000 to 9,000 caterpillars during the nesting period. No caterpillars means no nesting birds, regardless of how many feeders are present.

🌳 Acorns — 96 documented vertebrate species consume acorns, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, black bears, blue jays, wood ducks, and dozens of small mammal species. A single mature oak produces 10,000–20,000 acorns per year in a good mast year.

🌳 Leaf litter — Over 200 moth and butterfly species spend part of their life cycle in oak leaf litter specifically, not just any fallen leaves. This is why leaving oak leaf litter in place under and around oak trees is one of the highest-value conservation actions a homeowner can take.

🌳 Underground network — Oak roots form extensive mycorrhizal networks with soil fungi that connect to neighboring plants, sharing water and nutrients across distances of hundreds of feet.

🌳 Galls — Up to 800 insect species use oak galls — abnormal growths triggered by insect activity — as nurseries, food, and shelter. Galls on oak leaves and stems are signs of a healthy, functioning ecosystem, not a problem to treat.

If you have space for one tree in a yard or garden, an oak native to your region will provide more ecological value than any other choice.
