So what do Sea Scouts do in the winter? We keep sailing! Thanks to the generosity of Iceboats of Saratoga NY Region and Paul Chamberland the ship has come into possession of a DN Iceboat. We’ve been restoring her and are about 3/4 done. We hope to have her on the ice soon!

It is with a heavy heart that we have to say that we have called an early end to this year’s long cruise. Between lock & water way issues and a cascade of engine issues we feel it would be unwise to continue.

We have to give big thanks to all our family and friends who have provided support, material, rides and such as we attempted to work through our issues.

While our adventure has been short on miles it has been long on learning. We learned much about locking through a large boat and we’ve all had a chance to learn much about diesel engine maintenance.

Next year —Champlain or bust!

So a bit of a challenge and quite the change of plans today. We cleared lock C-1 on the Champlain canal at about 0830 and got about an hour north when we lost power.

Through some help from friends (Bert Dodge who just happened to be passing on Route 4 and saw broken down. And a few calls to Big Mike from AYC) and a bit of true ingenuity from Captain Jim and having the parts handy to improve Dark Star’s fuel filtration we were back underway by 1230.

While repairs were underway we learned that unfortunately Champlain Canal locks 7, 8, & 9 are closed until further notice due to low water levels.

We made it back to lock C-1 in time for the last passage south and are back at the free wall in Waterford.

Tonight we’ll break out the guide books and maps to plan our Erie Canal long cruise as we head west. It will be a different adventure that what we set out for but adventure all the same!

Ship 1415 long cruise 2025 is under way! We took a short hop from Albany to Waterford through the federal lock at Troy today. We had great time grilling burgers on the free dock at Waterford and had nice visit with some of the skipper’s family. Tomorrow we push North to Fort Edward.

Ship 1415 had a great time hosting Sea Scout Ships 243 & 117 for dinner at Ship 1415’s home port Albany Yacht Club. Out of New Jersey, these Ships are visiting Albany as the North end of their long cruise. We got a great tour of their boat “Sea Horse”, a retired 65’ navy patrol boat and took a short cruise up and down the Hudson. There was much fun and camaraderie. A big thank you to Skipper Bob and the crew of the Sea Horse for letting us get time at the helm of their awesome boat!

Just one more thing that makes Sea Scouts unlike any other Scout program!

Ship 1415 dodged between the rain drops last night and stepped the mast on the Sail Master 22. Many hands made light work and she went up pretty easy. Next up Hank on the sails and get her out for a sail!

It has been a busy, busy week for Ship 1415! We held our first motorboating merit badge weekend and it was great success. We had nine scouts earn the merit badge and get a feel for what Sea Scouting is all about.

Then we had a big push to wrap up the final details to launch our new-to-us 22’ Sail Master and finally have her in the water. A huge thank you to Albany Yacht Club for giving us a place to keep her. Why not join us Tuesday night at AYC? We’re going to step her mast and will probably get in an inaugural sail.

The crew of the Invictus is excited to announce our 2025 fundraiser selling Twin Rivers Council Sea Scout Ship 1415 "TREAD WATER" council strip patches, the second in our series of traditional nautical tattoo themed patches.

The CSP is black background with black merrowed edge. It shows two feet standing on a line with TREAD WATER a pig and a chicken "tattooed" across the feet. The feet glow in the dark. "Twin Rivers Council" appears on the top rocker and "Sea Scout Ship XIV XV Invictus" along the bottom. The Sea Scout logo is centered on the patch. See the details in PatchScan: https://www.patchscan.com/patches/45711/4d373d400697/view

This patch pays homage to the sailor's tradition of tattooing pigs and chicken on their feet as a ward against drowning. In the time of tall ships, if a ship wanted fresh meat livestock needed to be brought aboard for the journey. Due to the buoyant nature of the crates the pigs and chickens were kept in they were often the only survivors found if a ship went down, hence the sailors adopting them as symbols of staying afloat.

Only 100 of these patches will be made -- ever -- we will not do a re-order. Invictus has approximately 90 patches left to sell as of 20 March 2025.

A minimum donation of $20 per patch is requested, with all proceeds going towards supporting the programming of Sea Scout Ship 1415.

Order your CSP here:
https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=6Z33AL4W6A5QS

We will ship patches via standard USPS, or can negotiate costs for upgraded shipping. Please be sure to provide valid contact info when you order! We expect delivery in mid-April 2025.

The patches will be first-come, first-served and when they are gone, they are gone for good.

Thank you for your generosity and support!
