Today we lost another trans ancestor. What a light we’ve lost. What a responsibility she’s trusted us with. What a generation she’s closed out with her leaving. What an honor we were all alive as she was. What a life she lived. Although as a community we grieve, we also must continue her fight. May we keep on.

Who was Sylvia Rivera?

Sylvia Rivera, 1951 -2002

Sylvia Rivera was a Latinx Transgender activist, s*x worker, and trauma survivor from New York. She was a veteran of the Stone Wall Riots, which paved the way for the Gay Liberation Movement. Sylvia was a fierce advocate for marginalized communities, especially for communities of color and low-income trans & q***r people. She fought against the exclusion of transgender people from the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act in New York. Although, she faced opposition from the LGBT community, she continued to fight for marginalized and oppressed communities.

Sylvia Rivera Center for Social Justice is dedicated to Sylvia Rivera for her dedication to fighting for the rights of marginalized communities, centering of q***r and trans communities of color, her fight to eradicate systematic poverty & racism, and courage to fight for what she believed in.
