While summer temperatures may vary from year to year, the long-term data on extreme heat in Washoe County shows a clear trend. 📊🍃

In 2013, Washoe County experienced 3 extreme heat events. 🌡️ By 2021, that number had increased to 45 events, the highest level observed in the past decade. Although 2023 saw fewer extreme heat events than 2022, extreme heat remains more frequent today than it was ten years ago.

These patterns have direct implications for public health, infrastructure resilience, energy demand, and community safety, making extreme heat a critical quality of life indicator for the Truckee Meadows.

Today, on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we are highlighting what Nevada’s data tells us about the safety and well-being of older adults. 💛

Since 2015, Nevada’s elder abuse crime rate has declined overall, but recent data show the rate at 3.3 incidents per 1,000 residents, up from 3.1. 📊 Elder abuse includes neglect, exploitation, isolation, and abandonment, and it affects families, service systems, and our region’s overall quality of life.

By using clear, accurate data, communities can better identify risk, strengthen prevention, and invest in the supports that help older Nevadans live with dignity and security.

As this school year concludes, graduation season is a key moment to assess how students in our community are doing. 🎓

In Washoe County, 83.3% of students graduate within four years of entering high school. This is an improvement from the previous year, but it remains below the Nevada average of 85.4% and the Healthy People 2030 target of 90.7%.

High school graduation rates are more than an education metric. 📊 They are closely tied to employment opportunities, economic mobility, health outcomes, and overall quality of life in the Truckee Meadows.

This World Environment Day, we’re highlighting how air quality impacts both environmental and community well-being across the Truckee Meadows. 🍃

As summer temperatures rise, ozone levels can rise too. Ground-level ozone forms when heat and sunlight react with emissions from vehicles, factories, and equipment, affecting the air we breathe every day. Children, older adults, and individuals with existing lung conditions are often most vulnerable to its effects.

Washoe County currently ranks in the worst quarter of U.S. counties for high ozone days, reinforcing the importance of understanding and tracking air quality trends in our region. 📊
