Behind every data point is a human story. 💛

Executive Director Nick highlights how community data connects to real experiences through the work of LEAD with Horses, a Northern Nevada organization supporting mental and behavioral health through equine therapy.

At TMT, we believe data is most meaningful when it helps us better understand the people, challenges, and stories shaping our community. 🌱

Programs like these remind us that community well-being is about more than numbers alone.

Mental health support takes many forms — from crisis response and advocacy to healthcare access and community connection. 💛

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re highlighting organizations across Northern Nevada that help support individuals and families through mental health services, education, and care.

📞 Crisis Support Services of Nevada serves as Northern Nevada’s 24/7 crisis contact center and regional 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline provider, supporting more than 70,000 people each year through phone, text, chat, and in-person advocacy services.

🤝 NAMI Northern Nevada provides education, support, and resources for individuals and families affected by mental illness while helping reduce stigma through community awareness.

🌱 Northern Nevada HOPES offers integrated healthcare services including mental health care, substance use treatment, case management, support groups, and resource navigation.

Organizations like these play an important role in strengthening access to care and supporting community well-being across the Truckee Meadows.

Mental & Behavioral Health can impact every part of community well-being. 📊

Executive Director Nick highlights one mental health indicator tracked through NevadaTomorrow.org: alcohol-induced mortality rates in Washoe County.

Current data shows Washoe County’s rate remains higher than both Nevada overall and the United States, reinforcing the importance of understanding the challenges affecting our community and the role data can play in informed conversations and decision-making. 💛

Substance use trends can affect nearly every aspect of community well-being. 📊

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re taking a closer look at substance use and drug poisoning indicators across Washoe County.

The data reflects a complex landscape. Drug overdose deaths remain a serious public health concern nationwide and locally, with some populations experiencing disproportionately higher death rates related to drug poisoning.

From 2021–2023, Black/African American residents and American Indian/Alaska Native residents in Washoe County experienced significantly higher drug poisoning death rates compared to the overall population.

At the same time, some indicators among younger populations — including alcohol and cigarette use — have improved in recent years, reflecting possible progress in prevention and awareness efforts. 🌱

Understanding these trends helps support informed conversations around prevention, access to care, and long-term community health outcomes. 💛

What resources are available to better understand community health in Northern Nevada? 💛

Community assessments and improvement plans help identify local health priorities, service gaps, and opportunities for action. 📊

In this series, we’re highlighting three key resources:
• Renown Health Community Health Needs Assessment
• Washoe County Community Health Needs Assessment (Northern Nevada Public Health)
• Washoe County Community Health Improvement Plan (Northern Nevada Public Health)

These tools can support community awareness, guide organizational planning, strengthen collaboration, and inform grant and funding efforts. 🌱

Understanding community data is an important step toward building informed, effective solutions that support long-term well-being.
