How does public art shape the way we experience our community? 🎨

From colorful murals to sculptures in neighborhood parks, public art can help tell the stories of the people and places that make Northern Nevada unique.

In our 2026 Community Progress Report, Megan Berner, Arts & Culture Manager for the City of Reno Government, shares how public art creates opportunities for residents to connect with their surroundings and take pride in the places they call home.

And the numbers tell part of that story. With approximately 320 public art installations in Reno and another 48 in Sparks, our region is home to 368 publicly accessible works of art. 📊

Through programs like the City of Reno's Art Belongs Here, residents are also helping shape the artwork in their own neighborhoods, showing how community involvement can make these spaces even more meaningful.

What does it mean to have your community recognize the work you love doing? 💛

For Steve Laden and the Reno Host Lions Club, giving back has always been at the heart of their mission.

For Jorge Montano-Figueroa, Pediatric Injury Prevention Specialist at Renown Health Children's Hospital, it starts with helping children and families better understand the risks of preventable injuries.

Through community outreach and education, Jorge works with parents and young people to promote safer decisions, from motor vehicle safety to emerging concerns like e-bike-related injuries.

At this year's Accentuate the Positive, we were proud to recognize Jorge with a 2026 Silver Star Award for Public Safety & Wellbeing! 🏆

His work also demonstrates why tracking outcomes matters. Jorge shares how their injury prevention efforts have contributed to measurable progress, including a reported 50% reduction in pediatric fi***rm-related injuries over three years.

In our newly released 2026 Community Progress Report, we’re highlighting community members who use data, research, and lived experience to deepen our understanding of Northern Nevada.

One of those voices is Dr. Jafeth Sanchez, Director of the Latino Research Center at UNR at the University of Nevada, Reno. For Dr. Sanchez, demographic data is not just about population counts. It shows who makes up our community, guides more meaningful questions, and reveals whose perspectives may be missing from the conversation.

With more than 519,000 residents across Washoe County, understanding our changing population helps inform decisions about education, housing, healthcare, and other key areas that shape quality of life. As Dr. Sanchez reminds us, one critical question remains: Whose voice is still not being heard?

To help our community see these relationships more clearly, the 2026 Community Progress Report includes Explore the Connections, a new feature that shows how trends in one quality-of-life area can influence outcomes in others.

From the relationship between housing stability and educational opportunity to the way parks, arts, and the natural environment support health and well-being, Explore the Connections brings data together to reveal a more complete picture of our region.

By understanding where these issues overlap, leaders, organizations, and residents can ask better questions, strengthen collaboration, and identify data-informed opportunities for positive change. 📊

What happens when healthcare meets people where they are? 💛

For individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness, accessing healthcare can come with significant barriers. StreetReach is working to change that by bringing nurse-led care directly to people living on the streets of Northern Nevada.

At this year’s Accentuate the Positive, we were proud to recognize StreetReach with a 2026 Quality of Life Award in Poverty & Homelessness! 🏆

Led by Jane Fox, StreetReach has already enrolled nearly 300 patients into its care, building relationships and trust with individuals who might otherwise struggle to access medical services.

Hear from Jane about the importance of meeting people where they are, the impact StreetReach is making, and how expanded mobile services will help the program reach even more members of our community.
