UNDERSTANDING AMA CHAMPIONSHIPS AND YEAR END POINTS

It has been brought to my attention that there is some misunderstanding about the year end championships. I will try to clarify how the points are accumulated for both championships and divisions. To view the results, download from the AMA website.

In order to qualify for year end awards, the animal must be registered with AMA and the exhibitor and owner must possess a current AMA membership prior to the first show. Mule/donkey/exhibitor must compete in 3 approved AMA shows to qualify.

MULE CHAMPIONSHIP: Points are accumulated for all Bridled, Green and Open AMA mule classes. Open is when bridled and green compete in the same class such as halter, driving, pulling and gymkhana. This includes points from both bridled and green divisions of Western Performance, Ranch Performance, English Performance, Hunter/Jumper, Reined Cow mule, Halter, Gymkhana, Single Driving, Single Pulling, Roping & Penning or C**n Jumping.

Mule must be shown in 3 divisions to qualify for Championship. Mule may show in more than 3 divisions but only the highest points in 3 divisions will be counted.

These points are based on the mule only not the exhibitor. There may be multiple exhibitors on the same mule. Exhibitors can be trainers, owners, youth or amateurs. Points from amateur and youth classes are not included in mule championship.

DONKEY CHAMPIONSHIP: Points must be accumulated by donkey performing in all 3 donkey divisions: Donkey Halter, Donkey Performance and Donkey Gymkhana.

Points follow the donkey, not the exhibitor. There may be multiple exhibitors on the same donkey. Exhibitors can be trainers, owners, youth or amateurs.

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP: Points are accumulated by the amateur exhibitor and mule combination. Amateurs must possess an AMA amateur membership. Points must be earned in all 3 amateur divisions for the championship; Amateur Western Performance, Amateur Ranch and Amateur English Performance.

YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP: Points are based on the youth exhibitor and mule/donkey combination. Points must be accumulated in 2 of the 4 youth divisions; Youth Performance, Youth Gymkhana, Youth Driving and Youth Packing.

DIVISIONS: Awards are presented to the highest points in each division. Divisions and classes are listed on page 32 in the AMA rulebook. The points are totaled for each show and then added to the championship sheets in the results posted on the website.
