In Nevada since 2000, the wildlife commission has spent north of $7 million to randomly kill 12,000 coyotes and 250 mountain lions to enhance mule deer numbers. The results:

Mule deer numbers in 2000 - 135,000

Mule deer numbers today - 65,000 - 70,000

Yet, the commission continues to do the same thing. What might have happened if that $7 million had been spent in smarter ways...critical habitat improvements, research on reasons for decline, etc.
