Registered Definition = Passed National Board Exam AFTER having graduated from or being on track to graduate from a CODA* accredited Dental Hygiene school
The National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) is a standardized strictly monitored 8 hour, 350 question exam to evaluate the preparedness of individuals for the study and practice of dental hygiene including the scientific basis for dental hygiene practice, provision of clinical dental hygiene services, and community health/research principles with additional comprehensive questions on12-15 dental hygiene patient cases
Educated Definition = Graduate of more than 2900 hours
of Skills and Didactic Supervised Training from a Nationally Accredited CODA approved program, requiring countless hours of monitored skills practice!
Prerequisites: • CPR Health Care Provider certified • Proof of immunity and health declaration• Drug screening • State and Federal Background Check Requirements
Prerequisites to be accepted to hygiene programs (2 years total): Same as Med Students: *Chemistry 101 (with lab) • Organic Chemistry I (with lab) • Biology 101 (with lab) • Human Anatomy and Physiology I (with lab) • Human Anatomy and Physiology II (with lab)
Microbiology (with lab) • ENG101 • ENG102 • College Algebra • Statistics • Speech 101
Psychology 101 • Psychology 102 (or child psychology in place) • Sociology 101
During hygiene program (another 2 years):
Pharmacology * Oral Pathology
Emergency Medicine * Dental Radiography I and II (with lab)
• Head and Neck Anatomy • Pre-Clinical Dental Hygiene (bookwork and lab) • Nutrition • Embryology and Histology • Prevention of Dental Disease * Ethics and Jurisprudence
Dental Materials I and II (with lab) • Practice Management
Periodontics I and II • Community Oral Health I and II
Dental Hygiene Theory I, II, III, IV (coincides with Dental Hygiene Clinic I, II, III, and IV as lab)
Mandated Continuing Education Courses, Infection Control, and Basic Life Support
Accredited Definition = Attended and successfully completed all courses of a Dental Hygiene Program compliant and accredited by the National Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)*. “The Commission functions independently and autonomously in matters of developing and approving accreditation standards…”
Licensed Definition = Granted a State License Approval to Practice Dental Hygiene upon successful graduation from a CODA accredited Dental Hygiene Program and successful completion of an 8 hour National Board Exam, an 8 hour State/Regional Clinical Exam with specific requirements, a 2 hour State/ Regional Local Anesthesia Exam, and a 4 hour State Ethics and Jurisprudence Exam, applied to, paid for, and received NV State Board Approval
