Meet Sarah Farnham, our Spring 2026 Senior Scholar for the Orvis School of Nursing - University of Nevada, Reno!!๐ŸŽ“

Sarah chose to attend the University of Nevada, Reno because of the highly recommended nursing school and she knew many people who developed successful careers after graduating from the University.๐Ÿ’™

She chose nursing, because she wanted a major that would allow her to jump right into a career while also offering the opportunity for a great work-life balance.๐Ÿบ

Sarahโ€™s favorite college memories were the times she spent outside on the beautiful campus with her friends.๐Ÿ’™

She selected Janet Lake as her mentor because her passion for nursing and teaching is so genuine. It was very apparent to Sarah and her classmates through the way she lit up when she saw them growing. Sarah felt she could not have experienced clinicals in such an enriching way without her guidance.๐Ÿบ

After graduation, Sarah will work at Carson Tahoe with her interim permit, take the NCLEX, and then begin working as an RN on the surgical-orthopedic medical-surgical floor. Shortly after that, she will be getting married and moving into her new home! Congrats Sarah!!๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿบ๐ŸŽ“

Meet Ivanna Carrera, our Spring 2026 Senior Scholar for the School of Public Health at the University of Nevada, Reno and the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources!!๐ŸŽ“

Ivanna chose to attend the University of Nevada, Reno as she wanted to continue her education and experience new opportunities away from home, while still staying close to her hometown of Las Vegas.๐Ÿ’™

She was initially undecided and changed her major to Nutrition right before the start of her first semester. After realizing she had extra space in her schedule, she added Public Health as a second major, and later declared Sociology as a minor after enjoying her SOC 101 class.๐Ÿบ

Ivannaโ€™s favorite college memories include successfully balancing work, school, time with friends, and traveling to attend concerts throughout her college years.๐Ÿ’™

Ms. Molini is Ivanna's mentor and she taught her first Nutrition class during her freshman year, along with several of her other favorite courses. Ivanna admires her kindness and thoughtfulness in her teaching.๐Ÿบ

After graduation, she plans to take a gap year to work, travel, and enjoy herself before returning to pursue a masterโ€™s degree in Nutrition! Congrats Ivanna!!๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿบ๐ŸŽ“

Meet Derek Ngu, our Spring 2026 Senior Scholar for the College of Engineering, University of Nevada, Reno!!๐ŸŽ“

Derek chose the University of Nevada, Reno due to its overall quality and convenience. Being born in Reno, he had the opportunity to take dual credit classes at the institution and fell in love with the campus and community.๐Ÿ’™

He first learned about computer science during an eighth-grade career presentation. This experience motivated him to enroll in his high schoolโ€™s computer science program, where he grew to enjoy many aspects of the subject.๐Ÿบ

Derekโ€™s favorite college memory took place during the peak of chess club. The group bought 100 Taco Bell cheesy roll-ups for a friend to eat during a club meeting, but he unfortunately only managed to eat 20. It was the best $160 he ever spent!๐Ÿ’™

He chose Dr. Hand as his mentor due to her excellent teaching and guidance. Her machine learning course helped rekindle his passion for computer science, and her advice about both graduate school and life has given him greater confidence in his future.๐Ÿบ

After graduation, he plans to get his masterโ€™s degree at the University in computer science. Since he is already graduating a year early, he feels that spending an extra year or two will allow him to grow professionally while also building more meaningful relationships with those around him! Congrats Derek!!๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿบ๐ŸŽ“

Meet Drake Avisado, our Spring 2026 Senior Scholar for the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine!!๐ŸŽ“

Drake chose to attend the University of Nevada, Reno because of its strong and supportive community. Not wanting to be too far from Las Vegas, Reno provided him with the best opportunity to develop his professional career independently while maintaining a close connection to home.๐Ÿ’™

He began as a Psychology major, and because of the language requirement, he decided to take American Sign Language. Drake fell in love with the language, culture, and community. After discovering the field of communication disorders, he chose to double major in Speech Pathology & Audiology and Psychology.๐Ÿบ

Drakeโ€™s favorite college memory was leading a project to plan a field trip for local Deaf and Hard of Hearing high school students. He invited them to visit campus to explore the resources available to them. The experience felt incredibly rewarding, and he enjoyed hosting them.๐Ÿ’™

Drakeโ€™s mentor is Dr. Gautereaux, who introduced him to audiology. He decided to pursue a second major and was unsure of what professional path to take. Dr. Gautereaux helped guide him and answered his questions. Since then, Drake has developed a deeper connection to his studies and future career.๐Ÿบ

After graduation, Drake will attend Utah State University to earn his Doctorate of Audiology. He hopes to become a pediatric audiologist or work for the Veterans Association! Congrats Drake!!๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿบ๐ŸŽ“

Meet Riley Gillis, our Spring 2026 Senior Scholar for the Honors College at the University of Nevada, Reno!!๐ŸŽ“

Riley decided to attend the University of Nevada, Reno because it offered attractive financial advantages, including a Presidential Scholarship. He also thinks the campus is beautiful, appreciates that it is a Carnegie R1 institution, enjoys the proximity to Tahoe, values experiencing all four seasons, and most importantly believes the University is far better than UNLV!๐Ÿ’™

Deciding on a major was very easy for him. Because he is very interested in infectious diseases, the Microbiology & Immunology program offers access to elite faculty who are experts in this field. It is a relatively small, tight-knit community of serious students and researchers based mostly at the School of Medicine.๐Ÿบ

Rileyโ€™s favorite college memory was repeatedly pranking Dr. Sumby in Microbial Genomics and Genetics. Even though he never found them funny, he was a good sport.๐Ÿ’™

His mentor, Dean Matt Means, hosted a one-credit introductory course during Rileyโ€™s first semester. Aside from traditional lecturing, he taught and demonstrated how to be compassionate adults and good people. These lessons stuck with Riley and have played a formative role in how he tries to live his life every day.๐Ÿบ

After graduation, Riley is planning to accept a Graduate Deanโ€™s Fellowship recruiting him back to the University for a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology. He anticipates applying to medical school and ultimately, he wants to hunt pathogens in the tropics, savanna, and similar environments while conducting research! Congrats Riley!!๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿบ๐ŸŽ“
