Today we’re filled with joy to highlight Saskia, one of the newest additions to our team 💜. She brings a wealth of experience in agriculture, grant writing and business management; not to mention an infectious and playful energy that seamlessly fits into the farm. Here are some words and thoughts from her:
“Seeds, plants, and soil are magic to me. This biological mutualism of plants, fungi, and microorganisms (I would add water and sunlight) is one of the natural phenomena that keeps me enchanted with the world, especially when I feel despair around humanity’s treatment of the environment and each other. I feel inspired by small-scale, community-driven farms like Reno Food Systems that are focused on making nutrient-dense food available to people who face poverty and hunger. And I have to believe that growing food in this intentional way is one of the antidotes to the burgeoning greed and destruction that plagues society today, which is expressed in our industrialized food system. For example, emerging research suggests that glyphosate, the “silent killer” chemical ubiquitous in herbicides like Roundup, kills the mitochondria in our cells. We now know that this chemical, originally developed for Agent Orange used in the Vietnam war, could cause neurodegenerative or autoimmune diseases, even hormone imbalances. It is therefore in our global health interest to prevent harmful chemicals like these from entering our waterways and foodways. It’s hard to say that “small-scale” or “organic” is the answer when our population numbers are so high and when hunger persists, but I want to contribute to the movement to getting away from agrochemicals as much as possible.”
