During World War II, California hid an ENTIRE AIRCRAFT FACTORY beneath a FAKE NEIGHBORHOOD!
After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941, military officials feared California's aircraft factories could become targets.
One of the most important was Lockheed's massive manufacturing complex in Burbank.
The solution was almost unbelievable.
Make the factory disappear!
Under the direction of Army Colonel John F. Ohmer, Hollywood artists, painters, and set designers helped construct an enormous artificial neighborhood over the factory.
Fake houses. Painted streets. Artificial trees made partly from chicken feathers. Even clotheslines with laundry!
Beneath the camouflage, thousands of workers continued manufacturing military aircraft, including the famous P-38 Lightning.
The deception was so convincing that a military general reportedly couldn't identify the factory during an aerial inspection from 5,000 feet.
Only in California could Hollywood movie magic help conceal an enormous wartime aircraft factory!
