Let’s Stamp Out Hunger! 🥫📬

This Saturday, you can leave a bag of nonperishable food near your mailbox for letter carriers to donate to local food pantries. It’s an easy way to help our neighbors!

The 34th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026. As the nation’s largest one-day food drive, it involves residents leaving bags of non-perishable food by their mailboxes for letter carriers to collect, with all donations staying in the local community to support food pantries.

How to Participate in 2026

• When: Saturday, May 9, 2026.
• What: Gather non-perishable food items (e.g., canned soup, pasta, rice, peanut butter).
• Where: Leave a sturdy bag with your donations next to your mailbox before your mail carrier arrives.
• Alternative: Donations can also be brought to your local post office.

Important Notes

• Donations Stay Local: Food collected goes to local community food pantries, churches, and food banks.
• Items Needed: High-need items often include canned proteins (tuna, chicken), soups, pasta, and canned vegetables.
• Avoid: Glass containers, perishable food, or expired items.
• No Bag Required: If you did not receive a special donation bag in the mail, any sturdy bag can be used.

Just a few days to go until this year’s Food Drive! Letter carriers nationwide are preparing to hit their routes and collect your non-perishable food donations to support local food banks.

As we head into the final countdown, please join us in thanking our partner organizations for their support of this important effort year after year!

Freight Train Derailment Near USA Parkway Highlights Urgent Need for Rail Safety Reform in Nevada

Statement from SMART-TD Nevada State Legislative Director Gabe Christenson

RENO, NV — Shortly before 7:00 a.m. on March 27, a freight train measuring nearly 13,000 feet in length derailed just east of USA Parkway in Nevada. The incident occurred within feet of the Truckee River. A dirt embankment luckily helped stop the magnitude of the derailment. Without this barrier, several cars could have reached the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80, posing a significant risk to public safety.

Today’s incident underscores the urgent need for strengthened rail safety legislation in Nevada. The Sheet Metal Air Rail Transportation Union SMART-TD, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen BLET, and Assemblymember Max Carter have twice introduced commonsense measures aimed at preventing major derailments and enhancing the safety of Nevada communities. While one such bill passed the Legislature, it was vetoed by Governor Joe Lombardo, and a subsequent proposal did not advance during the most recent legislative session.

Meanwhile, Union Pacific Railroad and other Class I rail carriers continue operating increasingly long trains—now approaching 18,000 feet in Nevada—raising serious safety concerns. These practices, combined with deferred maintenance and reduced inspection protocols for both rail equipment and infrastructure, are widely viewed as efforts to reduce costs and increase shareholder returns at the expense of public safety.

Without meaningful reform, it is only a matter of time before a more severe incident occurs. The potential for a derailment comparable to the East Palestine train derailment—or worse—remains a significant concern for Nevada communities. SMART-TD, BLET, Assemblymember Carter, and allied labor organizations, including the AFL-CIO and the Northern Nevada Central Labor Council NNCLC, remain committed to advancing meaningful rail safety legislation. These groups will continue to advocate for policies that protect Nevada residents and ensure the responsible operation of freight rail throughout the state.
