Communities In Schools of Western Nevada

Communities In Schools of Western Nevada We measure our success by the results we are able to achieve for the young people we serve. You can make a difference – donate, advocate, or volunteer today!

Communities In Schools of Western Nevada serves more than 13,000 students in 24 Washoe County schools, providing a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, called site coordinators to remove barriers and help students stay in school. Communities In Schools of Nevada works within the public school system, determining student needs and establishing relationships with local businesses, social ser

vice agencies, health care providers, and parent and volunteer organizations to provide needed resources. We carefully evaluate all aspects of our programs, and use that information to constantly improve. For every one of our success stories, there are dozens of young people who need the help that Communities In Schools provides. Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. We serve the most vulnerable students in the most dropout-prone school districts, nearly 1.3 million young people in more than 3,400 schools. We are actively engaged with policy makers, school staff, parents and business partners to ensure that Communities In Schools’ services are extended to as many K-12 students as possible and that those students have access to college.Independent research demonstrates that Communities In Schools is one of very few organizations proven to keep students in school, and the only one to document that it increases graduation rates. In Nevada, 94 students drop out of school every school day. Currently, only 71% of Nevada’s high school students graduate; for minorities, it is fewer than one in three. The future for these students is bleak: chronic unemployment, reliance on government assistance, and high likelihood of incarceration. Dropout not only affects the future of our children, but it affects the future of our state’s economy. If only 10% more males were to graduate high school, Nevada would realize $111 million in crime-related savings and would realize an additional $44 million in income. Complex problems take complex solutions. Teachers can’t do it alone. Administrators can’t do it alone. It takes a community. That’s why Communities In Schools of Nevada brings together all sectors of the community – from businesses and other nonprofits to government agencies and faith-based organizations. Together, we provide the resources that help students to graduate on time, prepared for college, career and life. We are building a stronger state and nation. We hope that you will join us in our mission.

Community is in our name for an important reason: having community connects and empowers students and families. We recently invited SilverSummit Healthplan , CareSource of Nevada, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Molina Healthcare of Nevada, Texas Roadhouse, City of Reno Government, Washoe County School District, and Reno Housing Authority to share how we can work together to improve access to important services, such as healthcare and community resources. Thank you to our partners! We look forward to working with you in the new school year.

Because Washoe County School District principals are critical to our work, we recently hosted a breakfast to further collaborate. One special moment was when we hosted our I See You empathy-building tool, creating intentional conversations about what our students face, ways we can work together to keep kids in school by removing barriers, and engaging in their learning. Thank you to our principals for showing up and doing whatever it takes for our students. We’re fortunate to have you as partners.

Shout out to our CIS Site Coordinators for presenting on CIS programs that have been successful at each of their schools at our Back to School Summit. As an evidence-based program, we host an annal summit to prepare for the new school year. This activity was especially important to our work because it taught us innovative ways to improve student outcomes and engage students, families, and the school community.

As wildfires continue throughout northern Washoe County, we're thinking of everyone impacted. These fires are devastating, and the disruption to school, home, and daily life takes a real toll. To our students and families at Desert Heights ES Coyotes and Natchez Elementary School, two of the schools in our Communities In Schools family, we are here for you. Our team is also feeling this. Many of our staff have been impacted too, and we're working to make sure they have what they need to care for themselves while they show up for our kids. To everyone navigating evacuation, uncertainty, and stress right now, you're not alone. We're grateful for the first responders working around the clock, and for the strength of our community as we support one another.
