Meet one of our Legacy Scholarship recipients, Montana Strozzi.

"My name is Montana Strozzi! I am currently attending the University of Nevada, Reno, and studying to get my Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Conservation and Ecology. I will be graduating this year and am so excited to get into the workforce in the next couple of years. I am particularly interested in native fish conservation, and hope to be a fish biologist one day in Nevada. Besides getting my degree, I have been working towards this goal by working seasonally for the Nevada Department of Wildlife in the fisheries division for the last 4 years. I have a great passion for native fish, and sport fish alike, as I do a ton of fishing in my free time. I can’t wait to be able to apply this to my career one day!"

In southern Nevada, drought cycles have increased in frequency and severity, causing many critically important guzzlers to be depleted. Nearly 150 bighorn sheep guzzlers in southern Nevada have been constructed in remote and rugged terrain, creating access and monitoring challenges.

Our friends at the Fraternity of the Desert Bighorn are leading the Water Monitoring Initiative, and we are honored to be a partner. Satellite-enabled water monitoring technology provides near real-time guzzler water level and precipitation data through Ranchbot Monitoring Solutions and Track Tag LLC. This technology provides more proactive, and well-informed decision-making to address developing issues and even immediate problems guzzlers can experience.

To date, over 70 of these units have been deployed at critical guzzler sites through this initiative, thanks to FDB, Wild Sheep Foundation, Nevada Bighorns Unlimited , Fallon NBU , Grand Slam Club / Ovis, Meadow Valley Wildlife Unlimited, WHIN , and Las Vegas Woods and Waters Club

The Board oversees Nevada Department of Wildlife and relies on public feedback when making decisions that affect our wildlife and hunting traditions. You can provide your voice by attending in person or submitting written comments. Submit written comments by emailing [email protected]

Meet one of our Legacy Scholarship recipients, Gianna Powning Caselli.

Gianna Powning Caselli is a 6th-generation Nevadan who is honored to have held the title of Miss Reno Rodeo 2026! She competes on the University of Nevada, Reno’s rodeo team, but beyond the rodeo arena, Gianna is an undergraduate at UNR focusing on Biology and Criminal Justice. In the future, she hopes to have a career as a Nevada state biologist or work within juvenile detention. Despite her demanding studies, she remains deeply involved with the Reno community. Gianna volunteers with the Nevada Wildlife Federation, Nevada Ducks Unlimited, Nevada Bighorns Unlimited, and of course, the Reno Rodeo. She served as the first woman president of the UNR Ducks Unlimited chapter in 2025 and is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

This podcast is worth the listen. After decades dedicated to Nevada's wildlife, longtime Nevada Department of Wildlife biologist Mike Cox is closing out an incredible career, and we couldn't let this moment pass without saying thank you. Listen in to hear about how his story began and all he accomplished in his tenure with the department.

Mike's fingerprints are all over Nevada's wildlife management history: the state's first chukar forecasts, the first GPS collars, and the first wildlife crossings in Nevada all trace back to him. NBU has worked alongside Mike for years, and he's a huge reason we have some of the best sheep numbers in the country today.
