Nevada Land Trust

Nevada Land Trust Where there is nature, there is peace. Where there is open space, there are open minds. We are the Nevada Land Trust.

Where there are people devoted to protecting our land and wildlife, there is an enduring sense of purpose. We go to great lengths to preserve land and wildlife habitat throughout Nevada. With the help of members, volunteers, land owners, businesses and government agencies, we protect special places through acquisition, easement, open space planning, outreach and environmental restoration.

June is Great Outdoors Month!

Let's celebrate by getting outdoors! There are so many trails and places to visit that offer plenty to explore and wildlife to see, that you'd be busy all month long.

Land protection and stewardship is vital for continued access and the overall health of our lands. NLT has been part of many trail and outdoor recreation initiatives over the years that either created or protected public access.

Congrats to our friends at the Little Valley Research Station and the Whittell Forest & Wildlife Area, part of the University of Nevada, Reno for securing over 3.5 million in federal award funding for a 6-year project focusing on wildfire mitigation and forest restoration in Little Valley!

The project will cover roughly 300 acres and focus on fuel reductions near the wildland-urban interface in West Washoe Valley to reduce the risk of high-severity fires.

NLT has been conserving land in and around Washoe Valley for over 25 years, including our own collab a few years ago with UNR and the wonderful Whittell crew.

Today's "Conservation in the Sage" focuses on making Wildlife-Friendly Gardens at home!

We love Nevada's dramatic landscapes, unique vegetation, and abundant wildlife, and we love being able to get out to some pretty special places in order to do our conservation and protection work. But what happens in our own backyards (and YOURS!) also matters an awful lot, because it's all connected! Here are a few simple steps YOU can take to create helpful habitats in your own yard (these concepts work even in a container on your porch!):

- Plant native species such as flowers, shrubs, grasses, and trees.
- Provide safe places for beneficial bugs like bees and butterflies to call home.
- Add a consistent water source like a bird bath, fountain, or pond. Provide several water sources at different heights for a variety of thirsty creatures.
- Varied plant species and sizes attract and support more kinds of wildlife in your created oasis.

We'd like to wish our friends and partners, Our Story Inc., a belated Happy 30th Anniversary!

It was NLT's pleasure to help celebrate recently Our Story's remarkable achievements and to underscore the need for protecting even more of the history that built and defines Nevada today.

Our Story Inc. are pioneers in sharing the untold stories from Nevada's diverse history.

NLT is honored to be working alongside Our Story Inc. to ensure that the remarkable story of Joe Gans, the first African American World Boxing Champion whose 1906 fight with Oscar "Battling" Nelson for the lightweight title - as well as the place where it happened in Goldfield, Nevada - are preserved. Touted by the press at the time as the "Battle of the Races" - this bout was a defining moment in the sport's history, carrying on for a staggering 42 rounds with Gans being victorious in the end.

Interested in learning more about the Goldfield site? Check out our post from February 26 and watch for more news very soon!

We are throwing it back today to the year 2000!

Check out our first issue of our newsletter and some of the moments that helped define us as we rolled into the 21st century following our start in 1998.

Although we have continued growing and learning – and changing our name from Nevada Land Conservancy to Nevada Land Trust along the way – it's good to revisit our beginnings and celebrate how far we've come with all of you!

Calling all friends of conservation in the Elko, Las Vegas, and Reno-Sparks areas!

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is asking for your participation in the City Nature Challenge from April 24-27! In partnership with iNaturalist, the Natural History Museum, and California Academy of Science, NDOW is collecting wildlife ID data in these project areas through your contributions and photos.

To participate, start by downloading the INaturalist app and follow the instructions in the link provided.

https://www.ndow.org/blog/city-nature-challenge/

In addition, here are NDOW's top tips for best photo success during the event:

" #1 Get Close! - while staying safe and respecting wildlife get close to your subject.

#2 Focus! - take your time and get a clear and focused photo to help get a positive ID.

#3 Multiple Photos! - you can submit more than one photo and you should! Getting different angles will help get you to Research Grade!"

Events like this are a great way for folks to participate in the data collection to benefit our wildlife - all while building community support and pride for the natural elements that make Nevada special. Let's get out there to help!
