Twelve maids. Twelve deaths. Twelve voices that refuse to remain silent.

In The Odyssey, the maids of Ithaca are hanged upon Odysseus’s return, their lives reduced to a few lines in a hero’s legend. In Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad, they return as a haunting chorus to tell their own story, question the justice of their fate, and demand that we remember them.

The Penelopiad returns to the Reno Little Theater stage this weekend:

We’ve all seen fractured fairy tales before, but never quite like this one, which takes a hilarious detour through Robin Hood’s Nottingham and Sherwood Forest! Little Red Robin Hood must deal with the Big Bad Sheriff of the Naughty Hams (the Three Little Pigs, that is!), who do the bidding of Prince John, the vain Emperor who is eager to try on his magic new suit being woven by Cinderella’s deceitful stepsisters. With Humpty Dumpty, Black Sheep, Rose Red, and Simple Simon acting as her Merry Men, Little Red Robin Hood must save all the village grannies of Sherwood Forest, including her own, an old woman who lives in a shoe, Mother Hubbard, and Mother Goose herself.

Margaret Atwood's "The Penelopiad" returns to the stage this weekend!!

Reno Little Theater’s production of “The Penelopiad” could not have come at a better time. With everyone still thinking about Christopher Nolan’s film “The Odyssey,” here’s a chance to experience it from a different perspective.

While Odysseus is out fighting wars, charming goddesses and traveling for decades, his wife waits for him. This is Penelope’s story, as told by Margaret Atwood, from her upbringing to her agonizing years waiting for a husband she couldn’t be certain would even return.
