Court Appointed Special Advocates make a difference for abused and neglected children as advocates in Family Court proceedings in Washoe County.

In our community for over 30 years. Washoe CASA is a program of the Second Judicial District Court. The program began in 1990 and is part of a national network of 979 state and local CASA programs in 49 states serving children who are part of the foster care system. What Do CASA Volunteers Do? Volunteers, appointed by judges, get to know the child by talking with everyone in that child’s life: parents, relatives, foster parents, teachers, attorneys, social workers, counselors and others. They use the information they gather to inform judges about what the child needs and act on behalf and in the best interests of the child.

CASA FAQ: Why do children need CASA volunteers?

For a child in foster care, a CASA volunteer can be the one consistent adult who stays by their side throughout their case. While attorneys, social workers, and others often manage large caseloads, CASA volunteers focus on getting to know the child, understanding their unique needs, and advocating for their best interests.

CASA volunteers provide stability during uncertain times and help judges make informed decisions about a child's future. Their advocacy can make a lasting difference and help change the odds for children facing some of life's greatest challenges. 💙

We are proud to announce that the Washoe CASA Foundation was once again selected as a benefactor for the 2026 Helix Electric Golf Tournament! A huge congratulations goes to our co-benefactors, the SPCA and Reno Ice, who were also chosen this year.

It was a fantastic day on the green as Helix employees, contractors, and partners from Reno and Las Vegas teamed up to raise vital funds for Northern Nevada charities.

We are deeply grateful for Helix Electric's continued support of local foster children, helping us change a child’s story! 💙

CASA FAQ: What is the CASA volunteer time commitment?
Becoming a CASA volunteer is a meaningful commitment, but you don’t have to do it alone. Our volunteers receive training and ongoing support every step of the way.

Here’s what the commitment looks like:
• 33 hours of pre-service training + 3 hours of court observation
• 12 hours of continuing education each year
• Approximately 8–10 hours per month
• A minimum 2-year commitment
• Attend court hearings or coordinate with your supervisor when needed
