Meet Regina and her pup Roscoe, our October Volunteer Spotlight! 🌟 Regina has been volunteering with the Parks Foundation since 2021! Since then, she has contributed over 100 volunteer hours to the Parks Project as a Biodiversity Content Specialist, researching more than 40 local species for our database. Check out her write-up on the European Starling to learn how Shakespeare may have inspired an invasive takeover, or read about the Barn Swallow to learn how the first Audubon Society came to be. We are fortunate to have Regina's fun and informative voice helping to educate our community! If you want to contribute your writing skills to our mission, check out our volunteer positions for blog writing, parks history research, or biodiversity content!

A tortoise’s burrow is more than just a hole in the ground, it's a lifeline! 🏡 Desert tortoises rely on their burrows to regulate their temperature and survive the harsh desert climate. They are powerful diggers and are determined when it comes to burrow construction. They use their strong feet and claws to move dirt and rocks to create the perfect retreat from the desert heat. 🏜️ Burrows are also important for tortoise brumination in the colder months. Check out these photos of Pete's perfect digging feet and his personal favorite burrows. ❤️

Fall is the perfect time for a sweet pumpkin treat 🎃 and for 🐢 While we don’t have wild desert tortoises in Northern Nevada, we’re lucky to have Peavine Pete, our Habitat Conservation Ambassador at Rosewood Nature Study Area! Pete may have celebrated his birthday in August, but he’s always hard at work raising awareness about protecting habitats for tortoises and other wildlife. Tune in all week for fun tortoise facts and check out our tortoise blog from earlier today!

Plus, YOU can help make a difference in Northern Nevada for habitats by donating to Pete's Birthday fund or signing up for our Fall Plantemonium! 🌱 Click the links in our bio to learn more.

This week for 🌿 we wanted thank the NV Energy Foundation for awarding us a 2023 grant. This grant went to support our Student Stewards programs and youth education programs. Thanks to their funding our Student Stewards Program was able to offer hands-on community science programs in the classroom and on exploratory field trips to local, accessible parks. We are always excited to share our love of the outdoors and help to harness the power of nature-oriented science education with the community! 🌱💧 Thank you again NV Energy for your amazing philanthropic engagement!
