Most parents work hard to keep their children healthy – immunizations, nutritious meals, regular checkups. But most parents don’t realize that unintentional injuries are responsible for more disabilities and deaths to children than all childhood diseases combined. Often measures are not taken that could prevent or drastically reduce the seriousness of unintentional injuries.

Get your child's car seat checked for free this weekend! Renown Children’s Hospital and Safe Kids Washoe County are proud to host REMSA Health's next car seat safety checkpoint on Saturday, May 16 at 1095 E Second St. in Reno. The event will start at 9 a.m. and run until noon or after the first 30 cars, whichever comes first.

Volunteer Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be on site to inspect car seats for proper installation, check for any safety concerns or recalls, and ensure each seat is correctly fitted to both the child and the vehicle.

At Renown Children’s Hospital, cases of pediatric e‑bike‑related injuries increased by 730% between 2024 and 2025, with the average age of each patient being just 13 years old. Jorge Montano-Figueroa, Pediatric Injury Prevention Specialist at Renown Children’s Hospital, identified three key factors that are contributing to the rise in injuries as a result of e-bike usage:

✅ Lack of helmet use

✅ Higher riding speeds

✅ Limited access to safety education
