Safe Kids Washoe County Safe Kids Washoe County is working towards creating a safer environment for children.

Most parents work hard to keep their children healthy – immunizations, nutritious meals, regular checkups. But most parents don’t realize that unintentional injuries are responsible for more disabilities and deaths to children than all childhood diseases combined. Often measures are not taken that could prevent or drastically reduce the seriousness of unintentional injuries.

Set your child up for the safest car ride as you prepare to travel for Thanksgiving!

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there has been a rise in the use of car seats that aren’t approved by their agency. These seats may not meet the safety standards designed to protect your child in the event of a crash.

NHTSA-approved car seats undergo rigorous testing and meet strict safety standards to ensure they provide children with the highest level of protection. Here's what you can do to ensure your child's car seat is ready to go before the Thanksgiving weekend:

🚗 Check for NHTSA approval – Look for the NHTSA label to confirm that a car seat meets safety standards. Visit nhtsa.gov to review car seat ratings and ensure your model is current and recall-free.

🚗 Avoid purchasing non-approved seats online – Some online retailers may sell car seats that haven’t been approved.

🚗 Seek guidance from certified technicians – Local resources, such as REMSA Health's Safety Seats program, often provide support in choosing and installing a safe car seat. Schedule an appointment at remsahealth.com.
