So I’m going to start this off with an apology to everyone as I have been doing my best to answer any questions.

1. We originally planned to take a 6 month break, however with our new news it looks like we will be trying to take a 9 month break.
2. We still have horses in RKER care
3. We are not shutting down, just taking a break to take care of our family.
4. The truck donations are still allocated for the truck and we have not used it for anything. Once we get back and rolling we will be looking for trucks as the rescue will still need a truck.
5. All the shelters, panels and anything else is still on the property and will be used once we are back and rolling, nothing is being sold or used for anything else.
6. None of the money from the rescue has ever been used for personal use. 4 yrs and I have never taken a paycheck or used any of the rescues money for personal uses. That’s why I worked at Costco for yrs to pay for our bills and our life.

The first week of May we found out we will be adding another baby into our life. Which rocked our world and we were not planning or expecting this at all. So we had to figure out something to do to help our family move forward. We have our first doctors appointment this Friday to see our little one and hopefully help with my depression.
No one wants to know our family issues but, it’s why we are taking a step back for a few months. I personally have been fighting severe depression for months and that has taken a giant toll on our family and we have been trying to hold everything together on top of running the rescue 24/7 and I have neglected taking care of our family and myself. I have always put the animals first and done everything in our power to make sure all the horses are 100% taken care of.
Rescue is hard.

We are doing the best we can to keep moving forward.

We have both found full time jobs, yes we are in Idaho. We just moved up here to take the jobs we got without day care, with insurance, and with good pay.

This is going to help us with getting a roof over our family’s head in Reno.
The rescue is locked up and everything is stored away so it is safe and not going to be destroyed by the summer sun.

If you have any questions please reach out to me through messenger. I am doing my best to respond to everyone, please understand that this is extremely hard and the depression has made it also very hard. I know it’s no excuse but I am trying to respond to as many people as possible.

Hello RKER world! This is going to be a long and extremely hard post for me.

We as a RKER family are making a giant leap in taking care of our growing family. As many of you know we have been working our butts off for over 4 yrs to grow the rescue into what we have made it today. We have helped almost 400 horses in those years, and those are just the horses that have come into our facility. We have worked 24/7 to make this dream come true and we are so grateful for the ENTIRE community’s support. Without you our dream would have never come true.

However, on top of that my husband was working a full time job and I was working a part time job. In a short time things went in the wrong direction and we both lost them. We were getting ready to get permits and a loan to build our house, because as a family of 4 currently we are still living in a trailer with very few amenities. We have made it work for 3 yrs but we have to take care of our family and help us move forward so that we can help as many horses as possible in the future.

RKER will be taking a break for at least 6 months to work our butts off, save as much money and hope that we get to build our house soon. It’s going to be extremely hard to take that step back as it is my heart and soul to help the horses in every way possible. However, my family needs a roof over its head and stability.

With all that being said we still have 9 horses that are still in RKER care with AMAZING foster homes. We still assist with farrier, vet care and anything else they may need. We also have our little 2 yr old cryptorchid that we will need to raise funds so he can have his surgery! Quote is between $1600-$2000. We have a few prizes that we will be raffling off to hopefully offset his expensive vet bill so stay tuned for that.

To that end, and since we know there still will be a need for a safe horse rescue community in Reno, some of my friends and long time RKER supporters have come together to establish a new nonprofit, Hoofbeat Heroes Equine Rescue was founded by Ari Krause, who has been running the RKER Horsemanship program at her business, Haven Horsemanship, to continue providing a safe space for rescue horses to recover and find new homes. Hoofbeat Heroes’ equines will be boarded at Haven Horsemanship, like the RKER Horsemanship equines were. HH is a 120-acre property in the beautiful Warm Springs valley area off Pyramid Highway in Reno.

We are also hopeful that our fantastic recurring monthly contributors will consider continuing their awesomeness and switching their monthly donations to Hoofbeat Heroes, since they will be filling the gap left by the temporary closure of RKER. Ari is a kind and gentle horse trainer and riding instructor, and Hoofbeat Heroes has accepted several of RKER’s horses in transition, which we appreciate so much. Hoofbeat Heroes will have their monthly contributor links set up as quickly as possible, and they could really use your support as they get their new venture off the ground.

Please like, follow and support Hoofbeat Heroes Equine Rescue.

Here is their PayPal link to help donate!

Thank you to you all. We will still be here in spirit and posting on social media. All this has happened extremely fast and I’m hoping in the next few months we will have some awesome exciting news for you guys! This is going to be an extremely hard transition for us, we are 100% transparent, but please be kind and patient with us. The rescue is our baby and it has been an extremely hard on us emotionally to tell ourselves to step back and take care of our family.

We are still here to help with any questions, concerns and if you need help finding anything from farrier, vet, feed, boarding etc please reach out. We can also make a post and share as much information as possible.

We love you all and your support has made us the rescue we are today. When we get our roof over our heads and stability we will be hitting the ground running.

It is with a heavy heart that that we are advising you regarding three recent owner surrenders, Chance, Rio and Lexi. We had been waiting to contact their previous owners so we could inform them of our vet’s diagnoses before we posted about them.

Chance came to us because his owners wanted what was best for him. He was lame when they first got him and was lame on and off throughout the years, but this past year they thought he was doing better and seemed happy.

When he first got out of the trailer we could tell he was extremely well taken care of and very happy. We turned him out with Winslow and you could tell by the way he walked that something was uncomfortable. When the vet was out last week, we x-rayed his knees and those looked normal, so we did a few films of his feet and we could see it immediately. “The most abnormal navicular I have seen,” said our vet and we both knew that he was in terrible pain. Navicular disease is a chronic degenerative condition that affects the navicular bone and surrounding soft tissue in a horse's foot. There is no acceptable treatment for the stage his navicular had reached.

Lexi and Rio came to us because their former owner needed our help and wanted to do what was best for them. She got Lexi years ago and was told she had a neck injury and was unrideable. She kept Lexi happy and loved her very much. When we got her to the ranch you could see how much her neck affected her. She could not turn her head at all, and her neck muscles were completely atrophied from non-usage. She always carried her head low and always stood in a protective stance to keep herself comfortable. Our vet agreed that Lexi was in horrible pain.

Rio was a return, adopted from us for Lexi to have a friend. He was older when we originally got him and had not been handled much at all. He was a sweet old guy, a little reactive, but just needed to build trust. We watched him closely at the ranch after his recent return, since it was apparent he was very lame on the left front. I caught him a few times leaning all the way back and almost collapsing to the ground, probably just from extreme exhaustion. His ankles would not bend enough for him to lay down or get up so he was always extremely uncomfortable. We have a standing policy that we always take horses back so we were happy to get Rio back.

At our veterinarian’s suggestion, we made the extremely tough decision and last act of kindness to end their pain and send them over the rainbow bridge. It was an extraordinarily hard day and it has taken me a long time to type this up through tears in my eyes.

We are so grateful to their former owners for doing the right thing and letting us receive them, evaluate them, and take care of them instead of letting them get passed around and around. We are truly heartbroken but we know they all are more comfortable now and grazing on beautiful pastures above.

Everyone give a RKER welcome to Ginger a sweet 23 yr old mare, only had 90 days of training on her in the past but she is just the sweetest pasture pet anyone could ask for! Thank you to her owner by doing right by her and surrendering her to our care. She’s going to make someone a very happy companion.

ADOPTED

Charity is going to make someone a beautiful partner, she is going to need someone that will take a lot of time with her since it seems like someone was really rough with her. But she has a really soft face and is very willing as long as you take it slow with her. She’s about 8yrs old, sound, BEAUTIFUL, around 14hh. She got her feet trimmed and did great for vaccines and worming. She will try and nip at you if you cinch her up to fast and that is the biggest downfall have found with her.

Winslow has decided that he wants to keep a testicle.. he says we are not allowed to have it and he would like to stay as he is… he will so far be the most expensive 2yr old we have ever had. $1,900 to remove his bone chip and now $1,000- $1,800 to do a cryptorchid surgery! Please consider donating towards his care. We will be raffling off some prizes that all the money will be going towards his surgery!

ADOPTION FEE WAIVED

Croissant is looking for her forever home still! She is a sweet 6yr old QH mare who came to us with terrible feet. We have put a lot of time and effort into getting her feet correct we took X-rays of her feet today and her fronts look good, her right hind will never be normal but she will be a great trail horse for someone that is ok without perfection. She is very sweet and will make someone a phenomenal horse! HER ADOPTION FEE IS WAIVED, still comes with contract but we really are just looking for someone to love her and give her the time she needs!

ADOPTION FEE WAIVED

Journey is looking for her next forever home! She is very sweet once she gets to know you. She does not trust strangers but once she gets to know you she loves attention and just wants to be loved on for the rest of her life. Our best guess for her is a bucking string broodmare, she was great for vaccines, worming and we got her front feet trimmed still working on her hinds.
She just needs a soft landing spot with someone that understands she needs time and love. Our best guess of age is late teens. Please reach out to me through Facebook if you think you have the best backyard for this beauty!
