Genomic testing is playing a bigger role than ever in the future of the Red Angus breed.
The Red Angus Association of America’s GGP-LD (100K) test provides valuable insight through parent verification, enhanced EPD accuracy, and genetic defect identification, giving breeders more confidence in their selection decisions at an earlier age.
As part of the continued commitment to data-driven cattle and advancing the breed, all PGS (Phenotype & Genotype Synergy) animals are required to have this genomic testing completed in order to show.
This ensures a level playing field and helps showcase cattle backed by both performance and proven genetics.
Investing in tools like genomic testing not only strengthens individual programs, but also moves the entire breed forward.

First New World Screwworm Case Confirmed in the U.S. in Nearly 60 Years 🚨

A 3-week-old beef calf in Zavala County, Texas has tested positive for New World Screwworm, marking the first confirmed U.S. case since the pest was eradicated in 1966. The larvae were discovered in the calf’s navel area and the diagnosis was later confirmed by USDA laboratories.

The case was identified on a ranch near the Texas-Mexico border, where officials believe the infestation is linked to the continued spread of New World Screwworm northward through Mexico.

USDA and Texas animal health officials have responded quickly by establishing quarantine measures, increasing surveillance, and expanding trapping efforts in the surrounding area. At this time, no additional cases have been confirmed.

This detection serves as an important reminder for producers to routinely check livestock, especially newborn calves and animals with open wounds. Report any concerns to their veterinarian immediately!

One of the most anticipated junior activities at the Western National Red Angus Show each year is our annual pumpkin carving event! 🎃🐂

Hosted by the Western States Junior Red Angus Board, this tradition brings juniors together for creativity, teamwork, and a whole lot of fun outside of the show ring. From designing to carving, each pumpkin reflects the personality and imagination of our juniors, and no two ever turn out the same!

Once completed, the pumpkins are proudly displayed in the show ring throughout the week for exhibitors, families, and spectators to enjoy. It’s become a favorite WNRAS tradition and a great way to showcase the spirit and involvement of our junior members.

A huge thank you to TJB Red Angus and LB Farms for generously donating pumpkins for this year’s activity. We can't thank you enough! 🎃

We can’t wait for everyone to see this year’s creations in Reno!

The Roy McPhee Memorial Futurity continues to be one of the most meaningful traditions within the Western States Red Angus Association, honoring the legacy of Roy McPhee and his lasting impact on youth in the cattle industry.

This futurity was created to support and encourage junior exhibitors as they develop their programs, build their herds, and grow their understanding of the Red Angus breed. More than just a competition, it represents mentorship, opportunity, and the next generation of cattlemen and cattlewomen carrying the industry forward.

Programs like this are what make WSRAA special, and a big reason families continue to get involved and stay involved. If you’re not yet a member, we invite you to join us and be part of a program that invests in youth, leadership, and the future of Red Angus.

There’s a place for every level of involvement, and we’d love to have you in the WSRAA family.

🔥 NEW FOR 2026 - - - PGS BULL SHOW 🔥

The Western States Red Angus Association is excited to officially add a Phenotype-Genotype (PGS) Bull Show to the 2026 Western National Red Angus Show in Reno, Nevada, November 3–7!

After becoming the first Red Angus show in the country to introduce a PGS Female Show, we’re excited to expand the opportunity and bring bulls into the lineup for 2026.

The PGS format goes beyond the basics of the show ring by combining phenotype and genotype into one evaluation. Exhibitors will be challenged to not only present cattle with eye appeal and structural quality, but also cattle backed by strong EPDs and $Values that support real world functionality and performance.

This format encourages juniors and breeders alike to think deeper about cattle selection and better understand how phenotype and data work together in today’s beef industry.

📌 PGS Bull Show Information:
• Category 1A bulls only
• Bulls will show by age
• Classes divided by date of birth by the show committee

This is a great opportunity to highlight bulls that combine phenotype, performance, and genetic value all in one package. Start studying those numbers and getting your entries ready, Reno will be here before we know it! 🎉

Happy Mother’s Day to all the show moms and grandmas in the Western States Red Angus Association 💐

The ones who are up before daylight hauling trailers, rinsing out water buckets, and making sure every halter is packed (even the one you swore was already in the tack box). The ones who learn just as much about livestock feeding charts, fitting products, and ring etiquette as their kids do. And the ones who somehow manage to keep it all together with a wash rack hose in one hand and a scrub brush in the other.

Show moms don’t just support the industry, they help shape it. Behind every calm kid in the show ring is usually a mom who’s already fixed three problems, given four pep talks, and said “just do your best” while mentally checking if the cattle still need bedding tonight.

To the WSRAA show moms: your time, patience, and quiet dedication are a huge part of what keeps our junior programs strong. Today is for you! 🧡🌸
