In 2024 for the State of Nevada, more than 20% of the total electorate was made up of Latinos according to the UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Institute, which is a significant increase from the year 2000. According to the U.S. Census, nearly 20% of Latinos earned a bachelor’s degree in Nevada.

Today we celebrate National Latino Physician Day and the Latino physicians who care for our communities, advance research, mentor future health professionals, and open doors for the next generation.

In Nevada, only about 5% of physicians identify as Latino, highlighting the importance of representation in health care.

We are grateful for the Latino physicians and future physicians whose leadership, service, and commitment continue to strengthen our communities. 🩺❤️

The Latino Research Center at UNR is thrilled to champion the launch of its new monthly mentorship meetup, viewing it as a transformative milestone for student success and campus cohesion. By pairing an undergraduate student with an academic professor, this initiative serves as a powerful bridge to close the gap between faculty and students, creating an accessible environment where meaningful relationships can thrive. Our research center believes these structured connections will empower undergraduates to navigate potential career paths, gain firsthand insight into advanced faculty expertise, and deepen their overall sense of academic belonging. Rooted in the core value of supporting the university's vibrant community, this meetup reflects the center’s ongoing dedication to student achievement and inclusive outreach, ensuring that vital cultural and intellectual capital translates directly into professional guidance and mentorship.

To help kick off our monthly series of Lonche con un Profe, for September we teamed up with of the to speak with an undergraduate student, Ali, who is working towards a dual major of Accounting and Spanish for the Professions. The 2026 Northern Nevada Latino Policy Summit brought together entrepreneurs, members of the medical community, state and local agencies as well as experts across many sectors. Attendees participated in panel discussions over issues affecting Latinos in Nevada throughout the whole state. We thank Latino Empowerment Organization of Nevada and all the sponsors including the University of Nevada, Reno for providing this gathering. We thank everyone present for making this a great and successful event.

We thank The Discovery for the invitation to their State of the Discovery. It was wonderful to learn about the vision and efforts that resulted in the establishing of the museum 15 years ago, all for the benefit of the Northern Nevada community. Latino population numbers are expected to increase across the entire United States by 2060 with a projected 27% of the general population. In Nevada, that number has already been surpassed with 30% of its total residents identifying as Hispanic/Latino.
