Ranch San Rafael was the setting for Wild Horse Annie to come talk to members and friends of the NWHP.

Velma Bronn Johnston aka Wild Horse Annie (and portrayed by Chautauquan Kim Harris of Carson Valley) was born in 1912 and died in 1977. She became an advocate for Nevada’s wild horses after first seeing a group of wild horses being taken to a local slaughter house. Blood oozing from the trailer prompted her to get out of her car and approach the driver of the trailer. What she learned about the treatment and disposition of the horses prompted her to devote her life to saving Nevada’s wild horses and burros from such inhumane treatment.

This event was underwritten by the Estelle J Kelsey Foundation.

In 1971, the 92nd Congress unanimously passed the Wild and Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act. It was signed into law by then President Richard Nixon on December 14, 1971. Velma Johnston thought she had saved Nevada's wild horses and burros from inhumane treatment and slaughter. This legislation became known as the Wild Horse Annie Act.

Come here Kim Harris portray "Wild Horse Annie" on Saturday, October 18th at Rancho San Rafael.

It's an opportunity to enjoy lunch, meet with your friends (old and new) and learn a bit of history. Afterwards you can roam the Arboretum and enjoy Nevada's beautiful Fall days.
