May Arboretum and Botanical Garden within Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno, Nevada. The May Arboretum Society's mission is to serve the Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden by creating, maintaining and sustaining opportunities that promote greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of the role of plants in the high desert and mountain bio-regions. The Society's intention is to provide financial support and volunteer hours for the continued improvement of the Wilbur D. The May Arboretum Society is a membership-based non-profit organization. Membership is open to any person, family or group interested in the arboretum and its collections. The benefits of membership include volunteer opportunities in the Arboretum, early notification of workshops, educational opportunities, and an informative monthly newsletter as well as year-round discounts at area garden centers and nurseries. Volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to serving as docents and tour guides, children's programming, office work, workshop assistants, and gardening. Training is provided to all volunteers.

What a beautiful evening for the future of the Rose Garden. 🌹

“Come Fly With Me” brought together friends, supporters, and community members for an intimate evening centered around the Rose Garden Restoration Project. Guests had the opportunity to learn more about the vision for its future, explore what’s possible, and connect with the people helping bring that vision to life.

A heartfelt thank you to our Executive Director, Frances Munoz, for hosting and presenting, and to Jonathan Leong and his family for graciously opening their home and providing the perfect setting for this special evening.

To everyone who attended, supported, listened, and shared in the evening: thank you for believing in what this garden can become. 🌹

🍂 Fall is peeking around the corner!

Join Rod as he shares the last tip and trick on how we get the Arboretum ready for the fall.

Tip #3: Use the Fall period to see what trees turn what colors to add to your landscape in the Spring. Look for dead branches before the leaves all fall, so that you can prune out the dead wood effectively.

🌱 Not all garden preparation happens above ground!

For our second tip in our “Prepping the Garden for Fall” series, Rod is reminding us to think below the surface and give your grass some extra attention before the seasons change.

Tip #2: Choose a fertilizer that encourages root growth. Look for lower Nitrogen, higher Phosphorus, and moderate Potassium, such as a 5-15-5 N-P-K mix.

Because sometimes the best preparation is happening where you can’t see it.

Fall is coming in fast, and the gardens need some prepping.

We’re kicking off a new mini-series, “Prepping the Garden for Fall,” where Rod will share simple ways we prepare the May Arboretum for the changing season and tips you can take home to your own garden.

Tip #1: Start with a little cleanup. Remove dead leaves, plants, and weeds to give your garden a fresh start. But don’t clear everything away; leaving some dead seed heads can provide food for birds and add natural character to your garden throughout winter.

Every lasting legacy starts somewhere.

For the May Arboretum, it can start with one choice. A membership might seem like a small thing.

But watch what happens when one person joins:

You help care for the gardens.
The gardens create safe and open spaces to learn.
Those spaces help families experience nature together.
Those families help children build memories and curiosity.
And someday, those children may become the people who protect these spaces for the next generation.
