CanyonWalker Connections

CanyonWalker Connections The mission is to repair the division existing between social and Christian conservatives and LGBT community.

Canyonwalker Connections: uncovers and explores long-standing influences which have led to the discrimination of the LGBT community; increases and facilitates civil conversations and solutions for broader inclusion of the historically marginalized LGBT community. In 2001, Baldock, well insulated in the conservative Christian church and social spheres with no gay friends, strongly believes one coul

d not be both gay and Christian. After befriending a fellow hiker – a gay, le***an, agnostic, Native American woman, Netto Montoya – on the trails near her home in the Sierra Nevada, Baldock’s deeply entrenched cultural attitudes toward the gay community were challenged. Since none of her new gay friends openly identified as Christian, Baldock was able to maintain the wall between the two words “gay” and “Christian.”

After reading an article in the New York Times about gay Christians in 2007, Baldock became the first straight Christian advocate to attend the Gay Christian Network (GCN) annual conference. The intention was simple: to witness expressions of faith in the LGBT community. The relationships established at the conference set Baldock on a path to becoming an ally, and eventually a strong advocate for LGBT people of faith in conservative Christian communities and beyond. Baldock has been writing and speaking for equality and inclusion in churches and at national conferences since 2009. Baldock left her job as a successful sales person in the tech industry hoping to make significant impact for justice in conservative faith communities. Kathy Baldock Walking the Bridgeless CanyonBaldock has become a prominent female voice for inclusion of the LGBT community in conservative churches. In 2014 she published Walking the Bridgeless Canyon: Repairing the Breach Between the Church and the LGBT Community and is one of the foremost experts on the history of the cultural and religious discrimination of the LGBT community in America.

I've known Matthew Vines since before he started The Reformation Project and was his first board member.

I believe deeply in the work and mission of the organization, and Matthew and I are friends. I don't think we can manage a phone call under 1 1/2 hours.

Tuesday, I'll be doing a live interview with Matthew as part of the June fundraising effort for TRP. Join us live with a gift to TRP, or listen later to the recorded session.

TRP and CenterPeace trade off years for the annual conference. I will be in Dallas in October for CenterPeace and hope to see you there.

The TRP Ambassador Retreat in August will be local to me- at Lake Tahoe. I'll be spending two days with this trained group of changemakers. (I'll bring my timeline and my kayaks!)

Kathy Baldock is a fantastic advocate for LGBTQ people in the church. If you don't know her from her long partnership with me and The Reformation Project, you may have seen her in the popular documentary film "1946" as she helped lead groundbreaking research into the history of how the word "homosexual" was added to a Bible translation for the first time in the mid-20th century.

Kathy has just released a long-awaited new book based on this research, called "Forging a Sacred Weapon: The 1946 Bible Mistranslation Behind Anti-Gay Theology." She'll be joining me for a live conversation about the book on Tuesday, June 16th at 1pm Central, and anyone who makes a gift (of any size) to The Reformation Project's June Appeal is invited to join: reformationproject.org/affirming-voices. And if you can't watch it live, we'll send you the recording afterward. I'd love to see you there!

A four-part webinar series featuring leading affirming voices. Available to all June Appeal supporters.

I know most of you KNOW this, but, the SBC decision against women pastors and the anti-LGBTQ+ exclusionary practices of conservative denominations and churches is ALL THE SAME STUFF.
Each rooted in the beliefs solidly in place by 10K BC to enshrine patriarchy -- the superiority of men over women and men over males who "took the social-sexual roles of women" EVEN when those males had no agency to consent or pushback (they were enslaved, prostituted, lower class, captured, or foreigners among a dominant power).
It's all the same thing.
Can you imagine operating on assumptions birthed 12K years in any realm like health, science, economics, technology, social and cultural ethics and standards, military capabilities, agriculture, astronomy, any field. YET, this time-bound principles of the inferiority of women and those who "act like women" and the superiority of males are used to confine, restrict and bind women and LGBTQ+ people.
IT IS NONSENSE.

The level of disrespect from "good Christian men" is disheartening.

(see the vote from the Southern Baptists concerning women as pastors)

Yesterday, I was called an "arrogant skank."

And this gent, has asked that I, seemingly just a rib, be silent.

LOTS of disrespect is coming and will come my way. But, I have VERY tight boundaries on behavior.

I click on the profiles of the scoffers and revilers (oh wait, doesn't 1 Cor. 6:9-10 say that revilers will not see the kingdom of heaven?) and wonder how they do not see the disconnect between their proclamations of faith and treatment of others.

Not a rib, not a skank. Just a 70 year old woman who takes my faith, relationships, and academics seriously.

A dear friend sent me an anti-LGBTQ+ sermon/video that was played at his church.

I can BARELY stand it.

The sloppy theology, the juvenile level of thinking, the utter lack of understanding of historical context, the misuse of studies (and the "studies" are over fifty years old), the arrogance of "the Bible clearly says . . . ", and the certainty that his views are God's views.

My toleration of this tripe is growing thinner. Having done the academic work on the topic, it is SO SO SO clear when opponents have NOT done the work.

I am so sorry that this nonsense is spoken from pulpits as if God Himself is directing their words.

UPDATED: Many people who have never interacted with this page in over a decade now have much to say here and are clearly poorly educated on texts in CONTEXT and ORIGINAL INTENT.
You're feeling quite free to mock and call me names while showing zero interest in learning.
So, I'm going to hold you to your standard. According to 1 Cor. 6: 9-10, "revilers" do not inherit the kingdom of God. Well, dang, I want nothing to do with such folks. So, bye.
Post, and I will remove your comment and or block you.
This issue is not word game of slinging barbs back and forth to see who is more clever.
Read my book or don't. I am VERY confident that I have researched this topic far more than any person who has and will post here.
I am straight, my grown children are straight and I am doing as we are called to do—protecting and advocating for the marginalized. NO, LGBTQ+ people are NOT inherently sinners or rebellious against God.
Play nice, or play elsewhere.

A LONG, but really good interview with You Can Be Both about Forging a Sacred Weapon, the process, and the findings.

PLEASE go to her FB and IG pages and support her, give her love, and notice all the REALLY nasty pushback that, unfortunately, has become emblematic of some strains in Christianity today.

Also, consider joining her community. They will be reading my book, and I will participate in some of the sessions.
