Dean's Future Scholars

Dean's Future Scholars Dean’s Future Scholars empowers low-income, first generation students to graduate high school and achieve higher education.

Dean's Future Scholars (DFS) is an academic outreach program with the goal of increasing the number of low-income, first-generation students graduating from high school, gaining access to higher education, and entering a career in the field of education. The program is housed in the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno. DFS was established in 2000 by Dr. William Sparkman, the Dea

n of the College of Education from 1998-2010, who brought the program concept from Texas Tech University. Today, Dean Dean Easton-Brooks is committed to supporting the program's mission. Each year students are identified in the sixth grade from selected Title 1 schools throughout the Washoe County School District (WCSD) for participation in DFS. Once students are identified during their 6th-grade year, DFS will follow the students at their respective school throughout their middle school, high school, and college. In addition, DFS has an open door policy where program alumni can access guidance and support, long after high school or college graduation. Very few outreach programs comprehensively address the needs of students at each developmental level, but this long-term approach fosters a "family feel", which is the secret to the program's longitudinal success. Since its inception in 2000, 1,432 students in WCSD have participated in the program. To assist students in graduating from high school and college, DFS provides:

-Long-term mentoring
-Opportunities for students to earn high school and college credits
-Academic tutoring
-Employment opportunities on the university campus
-Assistance with college entrance requirements
-Financial aid opportunities

As we begin the countdown to the DFS Summer Program, we are proud to welcome our newest DFS students—Cohort 27—to the DFS family! 🎉

Being selected for DFS is a significant achievement and a reflection of each student’s hard work, potential, and promise. These students were identified and encouraged by their school counselors, administrators, and teachers—individuals who recognized their strengths and believed in their ability to succeed. Their selection marks the beginning of an exciting opportunity to grow as scholars, leaders, and role models within their schools and communities.

During their parent orientation night at the College of Education & Human Development, University of Nevada Reno, students learned about the many opportunities, resources, and support systems available through DFS. They also took part in one of our most meaningful traditions: signing the Oath of Achievement, a pledge to maintain strong academic standing, graduate from high school, pursue higher education, and serve as positive role models in their communities.

We look forward to supporting and celebrating Cohort 27 as they embrace new opportunities, achieve their goals, and make a lasting impact in their communities. Congratulations, Cohort 27, and welcome to the DFS Family! 💙💛
