Breaking news 🗞️

Reno City Council passed a moratorium on new data center development until August 2027. We’ve been fighting for this win for 18 months, and we’re so thankful for the Sierra Club members that have been showing up and putting in the work for that whole time, as well as the new folks who have gotten engaged in the last few weeks 🎉

But, this fight is statewide, and we’re continuing to put in the work day in and day out to protect our water, air, and communities. We’ve had town halls for communities and Tribes across the state, and we’re continuing to organize and fight with our members across the region.

Join today if you want to join the movement - the timing has never been more critical.

Reno - have you voted yet?

This is the last weekend of early voting before the June 9th primary.

We’ve endorsed Kate Marshall for Mayor, and here’s why:

-Kate has been concerned about data centers in Reno from the jump, not just during peak election season. Kate doesn’t want to see any data centers in Reno, but if we do build them, Kate will fight to ensure protections are in place.
-Kate knows firsthand how much public land access and outdoor recreation means to our community. As Lieutenant Governor, Kate fought to expand outdoor recreation and protect public lands.
-Kate is honest and upfront about what she believes and why she believes it, unlike some of her opponents

Kate is the best choice for Reno’s next mayor! We are proud to support her this cycle.

Tell Congress to stop the Forest Service from using pesticides in the Tahoe Basin! 🏔️🗻

The Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter is deeply concerned by the U.S. Forest Service’s proposed use of glyphosate in the Caldor Burn area near Lake Tahoe. We have heard overwhelmingly from our members, volunteers, and community members across the Tahoe region who strongly oppose the use of pesticides in our forests and watershed. The Forest Service has stated that there are currently no plans to apply glyphosate in the Caldor Burn area until 2028, but the proposal itself raises serious alarm.

We do not believe glyphosate — a chemical linked to cancer and known to pose risks to human health, wildlife, and ecosystems — is an appropriate tool for forest management. We support science-based revegetation and restoration efforts in burn areas, but spraying harmful herbicides in the Lake Tahoe watershed is unacceptable.

That is why we are calling on Congress and the Forest Service to abandon any plans to use glyphosate spraying as a forest management strategy in Lake Tahoe or elsewhere across the national forest system.

The Sierra Club opposes the widespread use of herbicides to advance timber-centric management practices that have too often damaged public lands and forest ecosystems. Our forests are already under unprecedented pressure from climate change, severe wildfire, and ongoing attacks on environmental protections — from cuts and reorganization within the Forest Service to efforts to weaken longstanding safeguards like the Roadless Rule.

The communities of Lake Tahoe, California, and Northern Nevada cherish this lake and the forests that surround it. Nearly half a million people rely on the Truckee River watershed, which originates in the Tahoe Basin, for their drinking water. Using a carcinogenic pesticide near the source of that watershed is unconscionable.

We will continue fighting to protect Lake Tahoe, the Truckee River watershed, and our public lands from harmful and unnecessary pesticide use.

Last week Sierra club staff and volunteers travelled to Washington DC to lobby for our public lands. 🗻🏔️Our environmental protections are under unprecedented threats from this administration.
A few of the things that we were advocating for include:

Keeping the Roadless Rule intact 🌲🌲. The roadless rule protects certain areas of forest service land from road development. These areas contain some of the most pristine habitat available for our native species and provide some of the best hunting, fishing and backcountry recreation opportunities.

Protecting the Endangered Species Act and our keystone species 🐻🐺. There are two bills currently in congress that strip ESA protections from grey wolves and grizzly bears. These endangered animals inhabit only a fraction of their historic range and need to stay protected not just for themselves, but for the wider ecosystem that relies on them. Repealing their protections takes the science out of the process and sets a precedent for species to lose protections for political reasons.

Pushing back against the use of the Congressional Review Act to roll back land management plans. ⛰️🏜️Currently congressional republicans want to use the CRA to roll back the land management plan for Grand Staircases Escalante National Monument in Utah. This national monument is home to numerous indigenous cultural heritage sites and boosts the economy of the nearby area. This place deserves to be protected for future generations and not sold out to extractive industry.

We couldn’t advocate for our public lands without the support of our members and dedicated volunteers who organized this!

Las Vegas! ‼️‼️ Join us this Saturday at 9am for a super walk for Vinny Spotleson for ad 41. We have endorsed Vinny because as a longtime environmental advocate we know that he will stand up for our communities and public lands against corporate interests. We hope you can join us and knock doors to support this grassroots powered campaign!

📣 We cannot be passive and sit by as we contaminate water with known carcinogens. We cannot stand for data centers to take priority over people. We cannot allow for road development through wilderness areas.

We have to speak up.
We have to sign emails.
We have to make calls.

📲 Profile link thanks to makes standing up for Tahoe easy with an email. But you have to DO IT.

🛑No herbicides in Tahoe.

We want protected places to recreate, play, recover and find peace for generations to come. Smart growth. Smart planning. Funded forests.

🚨 Today, the Reno City Council voted to approve the City’s first-ever moratorium on new data centers, a major milestone in the fight to protect our communities, water, and climate future. 🔥

This victory did not happen overnight. The Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter has been at this fight from the very beginning, starting with our appeal of the Webb Data Center approval and continuing through months of organizing, advocacy, public education, and testimony. We pushed for Reno to confront the real impacts of unchecked data center growth on water resources, energy demand, air quality, and community planning.

While this temporary moratorium is an important first step, the work is far from over. Reno now has an opportunity, and responsibility, to create strong protections, meaningful oversight, and long-term policies that put residents and natural resources before corporate expansion.

We also want to thank our partners at Water Over Data Alliance ( ) for their Indigenous-led organizing and advocacy in support of this effort. Community pressure made this moment possible.

This is what persistence looks like. And we’re just getting started.

Yesterday, the Elko County Commission approved a private ski resort in the Ruby Mountains for “friends and family” of the wealthy landowner, a California tech investor.

We are continuing the fight and working with local residents, Tribal members, and Indigenous organizations to protect the Ruby Mountains. Stay tuned for what comes next.
