Last week, the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada's CFO, Matt Lazar, took the stage at the 2026 FAOG Conference in Salt Lake City, joining community foundation leaders from across the country to discuss smarter, more resilient financial planning.

From budgeting and forecasting to scenario planning and data-driven decision-making, the panel explored how foundations can remain agile while keeping long-term community impact at the center of their work.

What a great evening with Northern Nevada’s nonprofit community!

Last night’s Nevada Nonprofits Mixer at AHA Connects reminded us how valuable it is to make space to connect. Strong communities are built on strong relationships, and we’re grateful for opportunities like this that bring our nonprofit community together.

We’re excited to see Nevada Nonprofits, our state’s new nonprofit association, which is working to strengthen and unify Nevada’s nonprofit sector.

At Monday’s Inspiring Local Philanthropy: Youth Mental Health event, we heard from phenomenal local organizations working to make youth mental healthcare more coordinated and effective for local families.

Big things happen when young people discover the power of giving! 🌟

Vivi, a four-year High School Giving Circle participant, and program facilitator Fayth recently joined KOLO 8 Reno to share what makes this program so special. They discussed how hands-on exposure to philanthropy helps students find their voices, develop leadership skills, better understand local needs, and discover that they have the power to create meaningful change in their community.

Exciting news—the application deadline has been extended to September 10! There’s still time for Washoe County students in grades 9–12 to apply, gain valuable experience, and help decide how $10,000 in grants will support local nonprofits.

What a great day of learning, connection, and conversation!

Last week, we partnered with AFP Sierra Chapter to bring AFP Donor-Advised Fund Essentials to Northern Nevada, giving local fundraising professionals the opportunity to deepen their understanding of one of the fastest-growing areas of charitable giving.

Our own Lyndsey, Maricela, and Eaton joined the conversation, sharing what we’re seeing in local giving, how we support nonprofit funds, and ways nonprofits can connect and engage with the Community Foundation. We loved seeing so many nonprofit professionals in the room asking questions, sharing ideas, and building their knowledge together.

A huge thank you to AFP Global for bringing this training and expertise to our community, to AFP Sierra Chapter for helping make it possible, and to everyone who joined us and made the day such a success. We’re excited to keep creating opportunities that strengthen our nonprofit community and help philanthropy go further across Northern Nevada.

The road to recovery from the recent wildfires in Northern Nevada will extend far beyond containment. For families who have been displaced, lost their homes or belongings, or had their lives deeply disrupted, rebuilding will take time—and sustained community support.

Northern Nevada is once again facing the heartbreak and uncertainty brought by a fast-moving wildfire.

The Hawk Fire has burned more than 15,000 acres and remains 0% contained. Nearly 90,000 residents are under evacuation orders or warnings, and six people, including three first responders, have been injured.

Our hearts are with everyone forced to leave home and with every family waiting for answers. We are deeply grateful to the first responders, volunteers, nonprofit partners, and government agencies who are working tirelessly to protect our community.

The 2026 Northern Nevada Wildfire Relief Fund supports local organizations that assist affected residents throughout the long-term recovery process.

To our first responders, volunteers, nonprofit partners, and government agencies: thank you. Your courage, compassion, and tireless service protected lives, supported evacuees, and helped carry our Northern Nevada communities through an incredibly difficult time.

As of August 18, containment of the Bug and Stallion Fires has reached 87% and 85%, respectively, and all evacuations have been lifted, allowing community members to return home safely.

But returning home does not mean returning to normal. Now, the work of recovery begins.

Teams are assessing damage and connecting residents with caseworkers, financial assistance, and essential supplies. Housing, fencing, water storage for livestock, and other critical needs are helping impacted families get back on their feet.

We are deeply grateful to every donor who has already contributed to the 2026 Northern Nevada Wildfire Relief Fund – your generosity has provided a critical foundation for recovery.
