The mutations on the Spike protein that enable it to bind tightly to human ACE2 and enter lung cells are not predicted to work by computer models! They would not have been chosen by bioengineers! Plus the bat/pangolin strain of the virus would be a poorer starting point than coronaviruses that are known to infect humans. Goodby conspiracy theory!

The persistent myth can be put to bed.

We are screening drug candidates for decreasing expression of ACE2, which is needed for entry of SARS-CoV-2 to human cells. In the pneumonia-like phase of the infection, ACE2 actually reduces damage to lung cells. Our ACE2 down-modulating drug could be used just for prevention of infection or co-administered with soluble ACE2 protein or an anti-hypertensive drug, such as an angiotensinogen down-modulator, which we are also trying to develop.

This study found that while the SARS-Cov-2 spike protein appears to be a hybrid of the bat and pangolin proteins, it is too different from the pangolin spike protein for the pangolin to have been directly involved in the COVID-19 pandemic. It appears to have mutated in the bat, so stop eating bats!

COVID-19 has become a global pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Understanding the origins of SARS-CoV-2 is critical for deterring future zoonosis, discovering new drugs, and developing a vaccine. We show evidence of strong purifying selection around the receptor binding motif (RBM)...

The first human trial of a COVID-19 vaccine finds that it is safe, well-tolerated, and induces a rapid immune response

The Ad5 vectored COVID-19 vaccine is tolerable and immunogenic at 28 days post-vaccination. Humoral responses against SARS-CoV-2 peaked at day 28 post-vaccination in healthy adults, and rapid specific T-cell responses were noted from day 14 post-vaccination. Our findings suggest that the Ad5 vectore...

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have found that the chance of a false negative result — when a virus is not detected in a person who actually is, or recently has been, infected — is greater than 1 in 5 and, at times, far higher.

Two copies of the APOE4 variant, which confers a higher risk of dementia, doubles the risk of severe symptoms as a result of infection with SARS-CoV-2, according to a study.

Comparisons between coronavirus and seasonal influenza deaths "must be made using an apples-to-apples comparison, not an apples-to-oranges comparison," said Dr. Jeremy Samuel Faust and Dr. Carlos del Rio.
