June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month
Every older adult deserves to age with dignity, respect, and safety.
Elder abuse is more common than many people realize. It can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse, as well as neglect, abandonment, and the loss of dignity and respect.
Consider these facts:
• Approximately 1 in 6 adults age 60 and older experience some form of abuse each year.
• Abuse can occur in homes, communities, and care facilities.
• The effects can be devastating, leading to serious physical injuries, emotional trauma, and long-term health consequences.
• As the population ages, the number of older adults at risk is expected to grow significantly in the coming decades.
Awareness is the first step toward prevention. By recognizing the signs, checking in on older family members, friends, neighbors, and community members, and speaking up when something doesn't seem right, we can help protect some of our most vulnerable citizens.
Let's work together to build communities where every older adult is valued, respected, and supported.
