STRONGER COUNTY RULES DO NOT CLOSE GIGALAND’S PATH.
Fauquier County’s October 8 vote strengthened data center zoning restrictions. That is progress worth recognizing. It does not automatically stop a boundary line adjustment or annexation that could bring Gigaland’s proposed site into Re*****on.
Re*****on Town Council has a work session tonight, Wednesday, October 14, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 105 East Main Street. Citizens Time is included. Gigaland, annexation and a boundary adjustment are not explicitly listed on the agenda, but residents can raise concerns and ask whether any formal steps have been taken.
If the site becomes part of Re*****on, zoning authority would shift to the town. Neither process would itself approve a data center, but either could change who decides and which zoning rules apply. Residents should not assume the county’s new PCID restrictions would govern town approvals.
A voluntary boundary line adjustment requires agreement from both Fauquier County and Re*****on, followed by the required court process. Annexation follows a separate legal process, and a landowner petition does not guarantee approval. We have not verified a formal Gigaland boundary agreement or annexation petition in the public records reviewed.
Residents should speak up while the boundary question is being considered. Waiting for a data center application could mean the decision about who controls zoning has already been made.
Watch Town Council and Board of Supervisors agendas for proposals, agreements and public hearings. Ask which properties are involved, what zoning would apply and whether proposed terms are available for public review. Put your concerns on the record before decisions are made.
Changing jurisdiction does not resolve a project’s conflicts with rural land, neighboring uses or the community’s long-term interests. A boundary change should not become a workaround for a proposal that failed to win support through the county’s planning process.
Stronger county rules are a step forward. They are not a reason to stop paying attention.
