Teva Teva works to fundamentally transform Jewish education through experiential learning that fosters Jewish, ecological, and food sustainability

When the Teva Learning Center was created in 1994, it was novel, and perhaps even radical to declare there was a group of Jews interested in bringing to light Jewish teachings with environmental underpinnings. Initially a program of Surprise Lake Camp, Teva is now its 20th year and is a program of Hazon. Teva has spawned a movement of Jewish environmental educators, schools, camps, farms, and orga

nizations that are working together on a common goal. Thousands of people have been touched by Teva curriculum and programming. They have felt the impact Teva has on one's connection to the Jewish faith, God and the environment. These profound moments of experiential learning and spiritual epiphany exemplify the magic of Teva that grows in the hearts of so many inspired children and adults who have gone on to make a difference of their own. One that will benefit the Jewish people and all life on Earth for generations to come.

Teva celebrates with Pearlstone as we name and dedicate our stream restoration site: Tëmakwehane.

We remember the story of the first human Adam and his responsibility to name every animal. Many Teva students got to explore this site last spring. We look forward to welcoming future Teva students to explore the Tëmakwehane creek. Working to dedicate an official name along with our indigenous partners marks an important milestone for this restored waterway, which is one of thousands of streams which feed the Chesapeake Bay. With this name we envision a vibrant future for the Beaver here at Pearlstone.

At Teva we celebrate the cycle of water:
"All streams flow into the sea,
Yet the sea is never full;
To the place [from] which they flow
The streams flow back again"
-Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) 1:7

"Tëmakwehane" - Beaver Creek

Language: Lenape (Piscataway); Phonetics: tuh-MAH-kway-HAH-nay

This Lenape name honors the Piscataway lineage. Beaver are keystone species to healthy stream valleys – they thrived alongside the Piscataway for generations. The living Chief of the Piscataway Indian Nation is from the Beaver clan. The Beaver Clan have long been the Piscataway leaders. It is meaningful to honor them in this way. Many animals inhabit the restored stream valley. Beaver, Mink, sometimes River Otter, lots of different Fish, Birds and Amphibians. This name uplifts the Piscataway people, our other indigenous neighbors, and the Beaver as wisdom-holders in our community. They are leaders in our ongoing journey towards ecological and cultural health.
