As many of you know, on July 4th, Help, Incorporated: Center Against Violence and SquareOne Family Justice Center experienced a sprinkler system malfunction due to extreme heat that caused significant water damage throughout our facility. In a matter of hours, the place that serves as a safe and welcoming space for victims and families was no longer available to us.

But we never stopped serving....

Our staff quickly transitioned to temporary locations and continues to meet victims and families where they are by providing advocacy, protective order assistance, therapy, forensic interviews through Kaleidoscope Children’s Advocacy Center, crisis intervention, shelter services, case management, and other critical support. We are especially grateful to community partners, including the Rockingham County Clerk of Superior Court’s Office, Reidsville Area Foundation, Eden Police Department, Willow Tree Children’s Advocacy Center, Rockingham County Economic Development and others who have opened their doors and helped us continue this important work.

Unfortunately, the damage extended beyond our building. We also lost clothing, food, hygiene products, household necessities, and other supplies kept on hand for adults and children in crisis. Because construction and restoration are still underway, we are currently unable to accept physical donations.

Our recovery has also required us to make the difficult decision to postpone our signature fundraiser, Unmasking the Violence, originally scheduled for August 29th. Right now, our attention and resources must remain focused on reconstruction, uninterrupted client services, and getting our programs back home to SquareOne. We are exploring the earliest opportunity to reschedule and will share details as soon as plans are finalized.

In the meantime, the work continues. Every gift helps us ensure that when someone reaches out during one of the most difficult moments of their life, we can still say "we are here help."

This Independence Day, we celebrate the freedoms that define our nation—freedom of speech, freedom of choice, and the freedom to live safely and without fear.

For many survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, elder abuse, and human trafficking, true freedom means something deeply personal. It means freedom from intimidation, control, fear, isolation, and abuse. It means having the opportunity to heal, rebuild, and create a future filled with hope.

As fireworks light the sky this Fourth of July, let us also remember those who may still be seeking safety, support, and a path toward a life free from violence. Every person deserves to feel safe in their own home, respected in their relationships, and empowered to make their own choices.

Please note that our office will be closed on Friday, July 3, in observance of the Independence Day holiday. However, our crisis services are always available. If you or someone you know needs assistance, our 24-hour crisis line can be reached at 336-342-3332.

As children and teens spend more time online for gaming, socializing, and learning, it is important for parents, caregivers, and community members to stay informed about online safety. Internet Safety Month is dedicated to raising awareness and helping families protect youth from online risks.

This year's focus is PAWS: Think Twice! 🐾

🔒 P – Private Info Stays Private
Never share personal information such as your name, address, school, phone number, passwords, or location online.

🗣️ A – Alert a Trusted Adult
If something online makes you uncomfortable, tell a parent, caregiver, teacher, or another trusted adult.

🚶 W – Walk Away from Uncomfortable Situations
Leave conversations, games, or websites that make you feel unsafe, pressured, or confused.

👥 S – Screen Your Friends
Remember that not everyone online is who they claim to be. Be cautious when interacting with people you only know through the internet.

🎮 Parents and caregivers are encouraged to join a FREE live webinar on June 23 at 2:00 PM Eastern Time: "Video Games and Your Child: Spotting Red Flags and Staying Safe Online." Topics include how gaming platforms have evolved, warning signs of unsafe online interactions, and practical tools families can use to help keep children safe.

The internet can be a powerful tool for learning and connection, but it also presents risks including online exploitation, cyberbullying, sextortion, and unsafe interactions. Open conversations, active supervision, and education remain some of the most effective ways to protect children online.

📣 Join Us for an Important Community Conversation on Elder Abuse Awareness 📣

In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Month, we look forward to attending RCARE's Elder Abuse Awareness Event on Friday, June 12, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This educational event will bring together local experts to discuss the many forms of elder abuse and exploitation affecting older adults in our communities, including financial scams, neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and self-neglect. Attendees will hear from representatives of RCARE, the Reidsville Police Department, the NC Senior Medicare Patrol Program, Rockingham County Adult Protective Services, and Help, Incorporated: Center Against Violence.

As part of the program, our Executive Director, Maryjane Webb, will present "Aging with Dignity: Recognizing Abuse, Building Support, and Staying Safe," focusing on identifying warning signs, strengthening support systems, and helping older adults maintain safety and independence.

Elder abuse is often hidden and underreported. According to national estimates, millions of older adults experience some form of abuse, neglect, or exploitation each year, yet only a fraction of cases are ever reported. Financial exploitation alone costs older Americans billions of dollars annually. As our population ages, it becomes increasingly important for all of us to recognize the warning signs and know how to respond.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, observed each year on June 15, serves as a reminder that protecting older adults is not a one-day effort....it is a year-round responsibility. Whether it is checking on a neighbor, helping a loved one understand potential scams, reporting concerns, or simply staying connected with older adults who may be isolated, each of us has a role to play.

Together, we can help ensure that every older adult in our community is treated with the dignity, respect, and care they deserve.

The Rockingham County Dept. of Health & Human Services will recognize June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Please join us for a pinwheel ceremony hosted by Social Services at 9:00 AM at the Governmental Center as we call attention to elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation, while also honoring older adults in our community. During the ceremony, attendees will help plant 83 pinwheels, each one representing an adult currently served by the County through guardianship.

Please join us in congratulating our four Forensic Interviewers and therapist from Kaleidoscope Children’s Advocacy Center on their recent attendance at the 2026 Carolinas’ Seaside Symposium on Child Abuse in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina!

Hosted by the Children's Advocacy Centers of North Carolina and the South Carolina Network of Children's Advocacy Centers, the symposium brought together hundreds of professionals from across the Carolinas and beyond who are dedicated to protecting children and strengthening multidisciplinary responses to child abuse. Participants engaged in specialized training focused on forensic interviewing, victim advocacy, mental health treatment, medical response, investigations, prosecution, trauma-informed care, and best practices for supporting children and families impacted by abuse.

Throughout the week, our team had the opportunity to learn from nationally recognized experts, collaborate with fellow child abuse professionals, and explore innovative approaches that will further strengthen the services provided to children and families in Rockingham County. The knowledge and skills gained through this training will directly enhance our ability to provide a compassionate, evidence-based, and child-focused response to allegations of abuse.

We are incredibly grateful for their commitment to continuous learning and professional excellence. The work of a forensic interviewer and child therapist requires extraordinary compassion, dedication, and resilience. Their willingness to invest in ongoing education ensures that the children and families we serve receive the highest quality care and support during some of the most difficult times in their lives.
