Every festival, every after-school arts program, every night a crowd gathers to hear music in Rockingham County, someone had to make it happen. Usually with more heart than budget.

The Grassroots Arts Program exists for those people.

Since 1977, North Carolina has put funding for the arts into all 100 counties, reaching places that big cultural dollars usually skip. Here, we administer those funds for Rockingham County. The grants are modest and the match is real, dollar for dollar, but for a small organization they can be the difference between an idea and an event.

Applications for 2026/2027 are open now. If you're a nonprofit, school, or community group bringing arts programming to the people of this county, we want to hear what you're planning.

The deadline is October 15. If it's your first time applying, reach out. We'd rather help you build a strong proposal than watch a good idea go unfunded.

A major new piece of public art is coming to Mayodan thanks to support from ! The Rockingham County Arts Council is teaming up with the Town of Mayodan, Madison Mayodan Recreation Department, and Visit Rockingham County to transform the pedestrian tunnel leading to the upcoming Washington Mills Park into a landmark mural. This is a chance to create something bold, memorable, and rooted in place. A piece of art that becomes part of how people experience the park, and part of how Mayodan tells its story.
