Repost Vintage & Iconic African American Everything

These men were known as Gandy Dancers, railroad workers who maintained and realigned tracks by hand. Many of the crews in the segregated South were African American. Because moving heavy steel rails required everyone to pull at exactly the same moment, a caller led the men in rhythmic chants while the crew answered and moved together.

But listen closely. This was more than a way to keep time. The call-and-response, improvisation and spiritual energy carried the men through exhausting, dangerous work. That same tradition can be heard in Black church worship, field and labor songs, and later military cadence calls.

In 1944, Black soldier Willie Lee Duckworth introduced the “Duckworth Chant,” credited with helping popularize the modern military cadence.

Black history lives in our rhythm, our labor and even the sounds America adopted without always remembering their roots.

Repost Malindi Press

Death. Disaster. Despair. That’s the story the world tells about Africa, and it comes with a price: the stereotype tax.

At the UN, Dr. Okito Wedi spoke with Akunna Cook of Next Narrative Africa about changing that story, and the money it takes to do it.
